Let’s Be Frank About Decluttering

Let’s Be Frank

Let’s be frank here. Decluttering is a tough job! Lots of emotions are involved during this process. Many organizational gurus will say it will take you X amount of time to declutter. PLEASE NOTE: This is a general statement to get you started.

Too Many Factors

Way too many factors are involved when decluttering. Each individual has there own issues that need to be addressed in order to move forward. That is why it is important to start with unemotional items first. This gets you into the ‘HABIT’ of decluttering daily.

Live Our Lives

We still need to live our lives! The clutter didn’t get here in a week and won’t be gone in a day. Keep Dancing and Decluttering. You have it in you to get it done. When you learn to do it ‘Your Way’, the magic begins!

As long as there are new products, there will always be clutter. Why? Because we simply haven’t learned the skill when we buy something new, something must leave our home.

The Clutter No One Talks About

You know the stuff. If not, let me remind you. It is the stuff laying around in your homes that have absolutely NO VALUE.  Example, a used paper towel or kleenex that didn’t seem to make it to the trash. What about the cap to the bottle of water you drank?

Then there is something we call ‘Junk Mail’.  Sure, the best way to get rid of that clutter is to toss it right away. Yet many don’t. Rather they will pile their mail and deal with it later.

What about all those ‘Stash and Dash’ moments when company will be coming? Who has the time to sort whether it is trash or not? Instead we shove everything into the nearest drawer with the least amount of things.

Then there are the ‘Expired Items’. Last time you checked, they were close to the expiration date. Remember? Time marches on and now it has expired way past the date.

The Solution?

How about grabbing a plastic grocery bag and doing a 25 Fling ‘THROW AWAY’ Boogie? That’s right. It isn’t glamorous. In fact it can be down right boring.

My question is, do we always have to have something to stimulate us and make us think so hard? I am finding out I don’t. In fact one of the things I am asking new members and anyone that wants to get involved is to do the 25 Fling ‘THROW AWAY’ Boogie 5 days a week. Yes I am right in there with the rest.

We as a group have been doing this for 3 weeks now and I am telling you, I am seeing a difference in my home. I have been surprised at some of the things that are laying around unnoticable but in fact is trash.

Decluttering Your Home Out Of The Depths Of CHAOS

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there was a ‘Magic Pill’ that would solve the problem of ‘Clutter’ and ‘CHAOS’? I believe all of us would take it as if it were a vitamin and yet… How many of us take a daily vitamin?

Example Of Taking A Daily Vitamin

Sounds simple enough, doesn’t it? And yet many have great intentions only to be stopped cold because one cannot make a decision as to which company to trust. Therefore, nothing happens.

Example Of Finding The Right System To Help You Remove Clutter And CHAOS From Your Home

Never has there been a time where so many are willing to offer what they think will work for you by means of getting your home in order. And that is where the problem lays. There are too many of them just like too many vitamin companies. It paralyzes us and nothing gets done.

The sad part of this is that in our quest, it ends up consuming too much of our time. Goals in life are missed because of this.

I created Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! To Remove Clutter And CHAOS. So what is so different from mine to others?

Habits

Habits turn into routines, routines turn into rewards = 3 R’s

Clutter! Get It Out Of Your Home!

Today in my secret group of Marilyn’s Way we are practicing ‘Throw Away Thursday. Many get excited to do a project like this but at the end of the day they don’t like the results. Why?

Clutter! Get It Out Of Your Home!

Decluttering is like laundry. It can pile up. The clothes can be dirty or clean. They just pile up. Why?

This rule could be applied to decluttering as well
This rule could be applied to decluttering as well

We don’t follow the rule listed above. It is the same way with decluttering. The following is the 5 step process to declutter.

We have to begin to look at this as a 5 step process.
We have to begin to look at this as a 5 step process.

Now if you are having trouble decluttering, the following are questions to ask yourself.

Valid questions to ask.
Valid questions to ask.

If you are not sure what to declutter, always start with the items that have no emotional connection to you.

I hope this gives you the courage to begin today and remember that ‘Rome was not built in a day’.

What Was I Thinking??? The Process Of Decluttering

As we go through the process of ‘decluttering’ we all have said this at least once in our lifetime…

What Was I Thinking???

You guessed it. We all have strange things we kept at the time for more than one reason or the other.

In The Beginning…

When we first began to start decluttering most of us were overwhelmed to say the least. For some reason many of us never learned that decluttering is also a natural part of taking care of our home.

It Was In The Memo

As we begin to gain control of our lives again, many of us aren’t ready to see this part. Instead if you were like myself, it was all about ‘Organizing.’

As learned by the FlyLady.
As learned by the FlyLady.

What Is Clutter Anyway?

It is very simple. It is items that as they passed through our hands we couldn’t make a decision as to what we wanted to do with them and think, ‘I will put it here for now’.

Then There Is That Deadline.

We have all experienced this as well. Examples include:

  • The invitation to a wedding that needs to be RSVP’d.
  • The special slip that goes with a particular dress one plans to wear to the wedding.
  • Just trying to get out the door to work or an appointment.
  • Throwing a ‘Birthday Party’.
  • Changing of the seasons preparation.

Here’s A Cheat Sheet!

We all can use a ‘Cheat Sheet’ from time to time to help us get moving. The following are questions we can as ourselves as we declutter.

Valid questions to ask.
Valid questions to ask.

Make Decluttering Fun!

We have to bring joy and fun back into our lives in order to feel any type of peace. Many of us are simply too serious. It is called ‘Lighten Up’ for a reason. That would also include clutter you no longer need.

Have some FUN today and play along with the game:

Do The 25 Scoop! And Cha Cha Cha!

When I created Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! System (c) 2015  three requirements had to be part of the system.

           1.  SIMPLE

                    2.  EFFECTIVE

             3. DOABLE

In order for it to work it also had to be………

FUNmarilynsway

Many systems suggest ‘decluttering 15 minutes’ at a time. Have you ever set your timer and then froze wondering how to go about it? I KNOW I HAVE!!!

So much of our attitude sits between our 2 ears. We have to get creative in order for us to make this 1. Simple  2. Effective 3. Doable.

One of the ways I have learned to distract myself enough to get this part of taking care of yourself, your family and your home is to count the number of items. It doesn’t matter how big or how small they are. Just start counting. I chose the number of items to be 25 simply because that is the day of the month I was born. Nothing more.

What happens when the phone rings and a friend says, “I will be over to visit you in about 15 minutes”? Most of us will get a basket or tub, run through the house and begin to SCOOP things up. If we make our habits jive with our individuality our chances of sticking with it are great!

Take doing the 25 SCOOP a step further and………

Next time you declutter put some music on and do a 25 Scoop And Cha Cha Cha!

Donation/Giveaway Box Oh My!

Every home has trash cans in multiple places in the home. We do it to make our lives easier. In fact if we recycle, chances are there is a recycling center set up in the home.

So why don’t we have a Donation/Giveaway Box located somewhere in our home? One of the rules to keep our homes free of clutter is if we bring in something new, naturally something old must go out. And yet we don’t do it. Could it be as simple as having a Donation/Giveaway Box located in let’s say our laundry room?

In my Marilyn’s Way Secret Group January is devoted to the 31 Day Cha Cha Cha Event! It involves throwing away, giving away and putting away  items in our home. When we do sessions of decluttering it is best to have three boxes set up for the task + a timer.

Then there is the time when as you go about your day, you may run into something that you wonder why you bought it and the thought “I need to get rid of this.” thought comes to play. Problem is we won’t act on it because we haven’t created a place to put those items like we do with a trash can. When trash cans are full, naturally they go outside for garbage pick up.

Clock for Marilyns Way Its Challenge Timename4

What is the challenge? It is to stop what you are doing and find a box or a tote and put a sign on it that says Donations/Give Away and place it in your Laundry Room. Next time you find something that you can give away, put it in the box and when the box gets full put it in your car and take it with you to drop off during your next Doo Wop Errand Day! It really is that simple.

31 Days Of Cha Cha Cha Event!

Christmas will soon be over. More items will come in than go out. What does that spell? CLUTTER! CLUTTER! CLUTTER!

What to do? Have a 31 Days Of Cha Cha Cha Event! It stands for ‘Throw Away’ ‘Give Away’ and ‘Put Away’. January is a great month for this event. Many will be taking down Christmas trees and decorations and will already be in the Cha Cha Cha mood!

Every day in January find something to Cha Cha Cha each day! It is a fun way of saying each day to Throw Away, Give Away, and Put Away 1 item and see what a difference it will make. If you are in the beginning stages of decluttering focus on 3 items each day.

It is your event to do as you choose. I know I can find one item of each for each day in January. Can you? Make the month of January a fun one to beat the winter blues! ~Marilyn.

Are You Trapped In Clutter?

It seems our homes, offices and lives are more cluttered than ever before. A recent UCLA study revealed that American families are overwhelmed by their stuff.

Advertisers seem to have sold the idea that our things will save us time and money all while making our lives easier. Instead the truth is our stuff is suffocating our lives.

Clutter Costs Money

  • Devalues our home
  • Takes up valuable space-both physically and mentally
  • Sucks up our time and keeps us from doing the things we want to do
  • A distraction and a source of continual stress

Big Box Office Supply Stores

Have you ever gone into one of these stores to get an ink refill for your pen and walked out with a large bag of all kinds of office supplies? If this has happened to you the store has accomplished its task.

Lack Of Organization

These stores try to convince us that our problem is lack of organization. We spend more money buying bins, labels, and dividers. The self-storage industry is a billion dollar business that is happy to take our money and store our stuff, costing us more than what our things are even worth.

Follow The 80/20 Rule

They say we use 80% of our things only 20% of the time or 20% of our things 80% of the time. However you look at it there is a reason to begin to do a ‘Cha Cha Cha!’

To Declutter Is To Cha Cha Cha!

  • Throw Away
  • Give Away
  • Put Away

As my mentor Flylady has said, ‘You Cannot Organize Clutter. You Can Only Get Rid Of It’.

Are You A SHE?

Are you a SHE? SHE stands for Sidetracked Home Executive in which the ‘Slob Sisters’ coined the phrase. Today many will use this phrase when it comes to explaining different styles of organizing.

The first time I heard about a SHE was from Flylady. In fact I am a follower of Flylady. I definitely could relate to the term a SHE. It made sense why my home never looked finished.

Since then, I have created my own system called Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! where the core of the system is practicing 9 habits that will help you stay focused to take care of your home and begin the journey of getting rid of CLUTTER and CHAOS.  I share it with others who are interested. There are 2 more Levels you can add to it once you become comfortable with the 9’s.

During gardening season is when I appreciate it the most. I want to be outside as much as possible. My thoughts are that winter is for the real decluttering and detail cleaning. I have been doing it this way for 4 years now. And this leads me to…

It is that time of year when my SHEness gets in the way.  I have been canning the vegetables I raised from the garden. Some that I picked still need some time to ripen. One of the places I do this is my dining room table.

For the first 4 days of this month we focus on Zone 1 – Entry/Dining Room. So what do I do instead? I found myself vacuuming in the living room. The small trash can was full so I took that out to the garbage to see my grass that I am trying to get to grow was dry that led me to watering the grass and all the flowers in the front! While I was out there I thought I should take Lily and Trixie on a walkabout coming into the house forgetting all about the fact I was vacuuming so I could mop the living room floor. And that, my flysisters is right where I am at! LOL. I don’t think SHEness ever goes away.

The sooner one can accept this, the better off they will be. You see one thing that is great about practicing Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! is you can jump in where you are. Knowing you are never behind makes it easier to jump in! So if you are a SHE like me, relax! We all can’t be like Martha Stewart. Accept the SHEness in you! I am!
