New School Year

It is that time of year again where any of us that are involved with school.  We come in many forms.  Some of us are teachers, students for the first time, college or vocational school.  And then there are parents that have children going to school while they go to night school.  No wonder this can be a stressful time.

Can you feel the energy building?  Now, everyone take a deep breath and exhale.  The retail stores like to make it a kick off to a mini new year.  Yes, this is actually their beginning of holiday seasons so marketing all types of products are the utmost importance.

Everyone wants to improve their schedules and the goal is to make it easy on yourself.  So we think we have to go out there and search for the Perfect Home Management System.   The problem is none of them are perfect.  Not even Flylady.  Flylady doesn’t say, “Follow this exactly and your home and life will be wonderful.”  There are some that will.  But do they?   Flylady lessons want you to give up the idea of Perfectionism because if one tries to make tasks Perfect, guess what shows up next?  Yes, here comes Procrastination not far behind.  Where one of these are, the other is always near by.  What happens when they both show up at the same time?  NOTHING.

Now, my question to you is, how did you get through the school year in previous years?  You must have had some type of system.  Otherwise you and your children wouldn’t advance to the next grade.  The thing is that you don’t have to do this alone so don’t try.  Today you go into any store to buy school supplies and each school has a list of items they want their students to have.  They have already taken the guesswork out of it. Don’t try to think you have to do all of this alone.

What Can You Do?
If you have been following Flylady and her monthly habits this year, you are ahead of the game.  So, what can you do?  It isn’t very glamorous and new and exciting like all the things new going on out there because of this time of year.

It is habits that you have been doing each day that one day turns into a routine and when you know it is a routine is when you are doing your habits automatically.  The thing is that you don’t even have to do this alone.  You have a cheering section just like schools have cheerleaders for each sport. The best thing that you can do for yourself is make Flylady a “we” thing.  I mean, get support from fellow flybabies.  How many Home Management Systems have the following that Flylady has?  Quit trying to do this alone and jump right in!  Situations will present themselves where one will be able to do the task for the appropriate time of year.  Get a three ring binder or notebook and start taking notes of these habits and routines you are trying out.  Do this for a year one month at a time.  This time next year, all the information you need will be at your fingertips.  Paper is paper.  Getting your thoughts down, now that is priceless.  Especially when these thoughts come together and you have a Control Journal, Home Management System, or whatever you want to call it.

If you haven’t shined your sink yet today, go do it.  There is magic there and you can see it with all the reflections of how you want your home and life to be.  They say the Kitchen is the “Heart of The Home.”  What is at the heart of the kitchen?  “The sink.”  This is where it begins and ends each and every day.  There is no way you can avoid a sink to get your day started or start your day to end.  The magic is in the sink.  So keep it shining and you will be shining.

This is where your day starts and ends.

Simplify Your Before Bedtime Routine

This blog was written in May of this year.  I was on Day 77.  I forgot I wrote it and is nice to see my top three are still my top three!

I have got to say, I never thought I would make it to Day 77 Getting Dressed To Shoes but here I am.  I made the Before Bedtime Routine as simple as it possibly could be.  This was one routine I struggled with.  Now, it runs pretty smoothly.

Here Is My List For Before Bedtime Routine

  1. I make sure my sink is shined.  Yes this has been another habit that I couldn’t seem to get my head wrapped around as to the importance of it until this year.  I have been flying since 2005.  Without the shiny sink, the rest would fall by the way side.  It happens very easily too.  So, this has got to be the most important habit to keep.
  2. I make my coffee and set it to come on automatically the next morning.  I am already at the sink so it just comes natural.
  3. I go to the bathroom to wash my face and brush my teeth.  It is a way of telling myself I am washing off what is left of the day and to begin to slumber.
  4. Before I take my clothes off to put on my pajamas, I PICK OUT MY OUTFIT AND HANG IT ON A SPECIFIED HOOK.  I have used jeans, tank top, and denim shirt to be my main uniform for flying.  I know I have at least three outfits I can wear this way and feel good about myself.  Lots of times I make a mental note as to what I will wear in the next two days.
  5. I have a bar stool in my bedroom to sit on as I change.  I haven’t been too good about starting my before bedtime routine early enough.  That is still a work in progress.  So I use the bar stool to get undressed and then I use it again in the morning as I get dressed and put my makeup on.  My bar stool swivels so it really makes things easy.  I deal with Fibromyalgia and that involves pain and tiredness.  This is what I came up with.
  6. I fill my sleep machine with distilled water and take my medication.  I set the sleep timer to my TV for 30 minutes, put on my sleep machine mask, get into bed, and turn out the light.
I know my Before Bedtime Routine needs some work, but I am going for the progress not perfection mode.  This is the routine that has got me to Day 77 Dressed To Shoes so when morning comes again, my Morning Routine is easy!

Gardening By Zones Marilyn’s Way Is Born!!

I wrote this today Monday, April 11, 2011 @ 3:30PM

I knew I wanted Zone 1 of Gardening to be the entrance of our home.  That just made sense with Flylady’s Zone 1 Entrance/Porch/Dining Room.  What will be the other 4 Zones?  I had to give it some thought.  I wanted it to work smoothly with the zones we use for cleaning our homes.  This is what I propose.

  1. Zone 1 – Outside Entrance to Our Home.  This is where 1st impressions begin with ourselves and others. What does your entrance say about you?
  2. Zone 2 – Vegetable Garden.  Many of us will be raising fruits and vegetables these coming months.  Some are beginners all the way to master gardeners.  I am looking forward to this!  Our very own flybabies helping other flybabies.  I decided to correlate the vegetable garden with the kitchen.  It just seemed to make sense and easy to remember.
  3. Zone 3 – Flower garden  This also seemed to be a natural progression.  Some may be making brand new beds or maintaining some from years past.  Get creative.
  4. Zone 4 – The Yard.  This will be about maintaining our yards.  Some of us have large yards and some small.  I know the summer months we will be mowing every few days and adjust to that mode.
  5. Zone 5 – Trees, Bushes, Shrubs and the Outside of the House. It seemed like last year I was always trimming something.  It is also a good time to inspect anything that needs fixing.

We are going to treat this like we do with our homes The Flylady Way and that is breaking things down into zones.  We will be doing 27 fling boogies, decluttering 15 minutes a day,  hot spot drills (we all have them in our yards!) along with it.  Together, I believe we can all have a pleasant spring, summer, and fall outdoors!

This week our Gardening Zone is 3  Flower Gardens.  I will be walking my property to assess what needs to be done.  The top of the list is 27 Fling Boogie!! with my garden cart.

Putting Together A Gardening Journal The Flylady Way

So many of us in the midwest are so anxious to start their gardening projects.  None of us know what type of season it will be.  Some are saying it is just going to go from cold to hot.  If that is the case some planning needs to be started.  My mom has planted tomatoes in her greenhouse and the seedlings are up.  It has been at least five years since I have had a vegetable garden and I hope it is like riding a bike.

My first tool in this venture is my Flylady Timer.  Many of us love to look at those magazines for ideas and dream, dream, dream.  The next thing you know an hour has passed and all you did was dream of those beautiful gardens.  Then you check facebook and their is Nikki Here: What’s For Dinner?  Oops!  That is why timer and planning is how this is going to work.  As I tell you, I am also telling myself.

You see, many of us can’t wait to get outside and would rather be there than anywhere else.  I am right with you.  The thing I don’t want to happen is lose my habits and routines that I have worked so hard to create for the inside of my home.  I have been flying since 2005 so I have had a chance to make a go of this for the 6th time.  I was sick during this time but always held on to Flylady.  Last year things began to turn around and I was able to be outside again.  Most of what was done last year is I guess what Flylady says and that is to Declutter.  And that is what I did by way of weeding, pruning, trimming and working on creating a palette for this year.  I did all of this 15 minutes at a time.  If I got too hot and felt faint I would come into the house and stick my head under the faucet to cool down and drink a large glass of water and take a 15 minute break.  We have to take care of our bodies in order for all of this to work.

The next tool I feel is important is a “Gardening Journal The Flylady Way”  This will be of your own creation.  It is very important that you have everything in one place.  Will keep hotspots from taking over in your home.  I have a 3 ring pink zippered binder with white and black flowers I bought a while ago on sale and knew I would use it.  Just wasn’t sure what.  I am a big believer of having a place where you can jot down notes, cut out pictures of designs, etc.  I like one that zips up too so nothing is falling out.

Look around your home and work place to see if you already have a binder that can work.  If not, go and buy youself one and bless it when you get it.  I am still in the planning stage but I do know zone work will be the backbone of this venture.  If you have any ideas that you have found to work for you, please share!

I want to make this fun!  I want this to be The Flylady Way! 🙂
Keep Flying!
