The Number One Tool To Help You With Fibromyalgia

Note: May 12th Is Fibromyalgia Awareness Day.

Maybe you cannot pronounce it, maybe you don’t understand it. Just know one thing. This is REAL and too many mostly women are living with it. It is called Fibromyalgia. I will also reveal the number one tool that has helped me the most in dealing with fibromyalgia but first some reasons why it is so difficult to treat.

Different Levels Affecting All Areas

There are all levels and it affects all areas. Fibromyalgia is a Central Nervous System Sensitization Disorder. This is why it is so difficult to manage.

Add Perpetuating Factors To The Mix

To best explain ‘Perpetuating Factors’ Devin Starlanyl Initiating, Aggravating And Perpetuating Factors Description click on the link. She has by far the best explanation and has written books as well.

Once one can ‘Identify Perpetuating Factors’, that is when the work begins at getting rid of them. This is so much harder than it sounds. Take it from me who has been diagnosed with it since 1989.

For the past year I have been reading up on how almost every illness happens in the gut. To rule this out, I have gone grain free, gluten free, almost dairy free (I eat yogurt/frozen and will eat cheese from time to time), sugar free, and junk food free. Yes, I slip every once in a while because this is such a restricted diet.

After Three Months On Dietary Changes

I can say I feel somewhat better. May that as it be, I still hurt, have sleeping problems and chronic fatigue. I have not reached the level where I can live a somewhat normal life because of these perpetuating factors.

Gearing Up To Seek Out Doctors Who Will Listen Again

It has been about four years since I have actively pursued ruling out other illnesses that can mimic fibromyalgia. In order to do this I have had to grow a thick skin metaphorically speaking.  Part of the problem is when a doctor doesn’t know, he or she won’t come out and say they don’t know and refer you on to someone else that may possibly know. THAT’s where many of the problems are found making it difficult to seek out a cause and be provided the treatment one needs to begin to get well.

The second part of the problem is if you seek out different doctors for various areas of your health, there is no guarantee that the doctors will consult with one another to help you solve your fibromyalgia. What is one to do then?

The #1 Tool That Has Helped The Most Is…

If you want to get to the bottom of this, I am here to tell you none of it is an overnight cure all. That said, there are many things one can do.

Get yourself a notebook/binder that will be your number one tool. Keep all of your health information, lab tests together and become your very own detective. It is the best tool out there today. The notebook/binder assists you in ruling out all possibilities.

Why Am I Ready To Battle The Purple Monster Again?

I am sick and tired of being sick and tired and I simply won’t stand for any doctor to say it is all in my head. Of course it is all in my head! It is a Central Nervous System Sensitization Syndrome. The article explains it well.

That said, I will not stand for any doctor who believes it is emotional for the sake of it being emotional. Of course it is emotional! Not being able to live the life you had planned and being able to have all the opportunities that other healthy individuals receive is going to make a person emotional.

No one asks to get Fibromyalgia like no one asks to get Cancer. The difference between the two? Cancer has a cure giving you the opportunity to get better. Fibromyalgia does not. If not treated properly, both disease and syndrome have one thing in common. You can die from them. Usually with Fibromyalgia it will be the perpetuating factors that will be the cause as many who have fibromyalgia can simply die of a ‘Broken Heart’.

To the ones that don’t understand fibromyalgia, give your friends and family the benefit of the doubt. If you don’t understand it. Tell your loved one you don’t.

Finally the best thing you can do to help your friend or family member is to be patient and compassionate. When you have plans and the plans fall through because they are hurting, don’t start not asking to do things with them. Just be prepared that it may be a bad day. Just like we don’t know when we can get bad weather again from the next system that passes through, it is the same for fibromyalgia. AND get this… The two are correlated together. It has everything to do with the barometric pressure.

How Do I Know What I Know To Date?

It is simply a matter of jotting notes down into a notebook/binder to collect information in hopes of solving your case. I no longer want to be talked down to. I have wasted so much of my life hiding. Hiding from ones that don’t understand, hiding from myself because I don’t know what to do next, and finally hiding from life. The latter is the one that hurts the most.

Today is Fibromyalgia Awareness Day. If a friend or family member wants to let you know about the awareness day, stop what you are doing and ask them, “What can I do to help make your journey to find the answers related to fibromyalgia?” Most will say to understand that you may not understand fibromyalgia and that’s alright.”

Canning Green Beans

I have been fortunate to have a high yield with my green beans from the garden. I did plant a second crop thinking the first one would be gone but it still kept producing.

Time to pull out the pressure cooker again and see how many pints I can process. But first I must prepare the green beans. I start by snapping the ends off.

flowers lily and trixie canning green beans 014 Cut the green beans up approximately half inch each and place into the jar.

flowers lily and trixie canning green beans 021 Scald the lids to ensure a proper seal to the jar.

flowers lily and trixie canning green beans 023Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt and hot water. Fill to half inch from top. Place scalded lid on jar.

flowers lily and trixie canning green beans 025 Place the jars in heated hot water. Add 2 tablespoons of vinegar to keep the jars clean on the outside.

flowers lily and trixie canning green beans 028Lock the lid and place the weight where it says 10 pounds pressure. Begin timing when the weight begins to jiggle. Allow 20 minutes to pressure cook.

pressure cooker 001Remove from burner and allow to cool 30 – 45 minutes before removing the weight and opening the lid.

baking 009Remove the jars from the pressure cooker and allow to cool. Date them if you like. These green beans are going to taste mighty good in the depths of the coming winter. The greatest part is no jars cracked and nothing exploded! These are things that a perfectionist will be afraid of and procrastinate canning the green beans at all. I am glad I have learned Progress is more important than Perfection.

Kitchen Cha Cha Cha!

It’s Gardening Season and during this time my kitchen can take a beating.  I am constantly in and out of it as the Kitchen is the ‘Heart of the Home’.

Yesterday I wrote about my ‘3 Day/3 Week/3 Load Limit’.  This is a way to help me when life gets in the way.  After 3 Days of not doing all of the 9 habits, it is then time to stop everything and focus on doing a 45 minute ‘Kitchen Cha Cha Cha’ 15 minutes at a time.   The following is my starting point and will show you my 15 minutes at a time progress.

This is a tutorial for educational purpose only.  I write about doing things in real time and have learned to be realistic by practicing this method.

Kitchen during gardening 018 My starting point.  I start at my Launch Pad working clockwise and top to bottom.  I start with the first Cha.  It is throwing away everything that has no value.  The next Cha is to put away the items that have a home and to group the like items together.  The last Cha is give away in which this session I don’t have anything.

After 30 minutes I was getting tired.  I had put 3 days of hard work into gardening earlier and am not at the top of my game.  I move forward with a promise of a 30 minute break that includes lunch.

Part of what was in my kitchen were seeds I still want to plant.  I decided to corral them and place in this container I can take back and forth as I continue to plant.After 45 minutes 006 These are ‘Moonflowers’ that have been soaking overnight for easier germination.

An Easy Way To Get Through The Day!

Did You Know?

The most we can remember at the same time are

3 Things

whether they are

 To Dos, To Call, To Plan.

    After that the brain goes into power saving mode.

Sometimes you can remember 4 Things. 

Have you ever really given much thought to the United States Phone Number?  There are 3 parts with groups of 3 digits in the first 2 parts. The last part is 4 digits.

How I Applied This Concept To My System

First, some history. Back in 1985 I began my outside sales career selling pagers or beepers. Remember them? In order to get good with my job I had to get good with phone numbers.  I only had to remember 1 area code. When we issued the phone numbers we would have a prefix that was the same as we issued numbers out individually. Therefore once I memorized the first 2 parts of the phone number, all I had to do is memorize 4 digits. Not only did I remember them but what was easy is the numbers would be handed out in sequential  order.

What Happens When This Routine Gets Out Of Sync?

Deal with it 3 things at a time!  Don’t let any  daily habits go undone beyond 3 days.  Weekly habits stay under the  3 week umbrella. Monthly Events 3 months

Finally, do not let Laundry build up past 3 loads.

I want you to take time to think of this method.  Your brain will thank you.  You will still get as much done without the stress of having to remember everything.  At this writing session it is morning.  All I have had to concentrate on was:

1.  Getting Dressed To Shoes

2.  Swish & Swipe

3.  What’s For Dinner?

After lunch, I will begin:

4.  Load Of Laundry

5.  Declutter Something/Anything

6.  Make Dinner Early

By doing this you will have enough energy left to:

7.  Shine Your Sink

8.  Lay Out Clothes

9.  Have Launch Pad Ready

You could actually have all of that done by 9 pm.  Then the rest of the time you can do whatever you like.  BUT if you get out of sync like we all do at one time or another remember the power of 3 with the :

3 Day/3 Week/3 Month/3 Load Limit

November’s Habits – Menu Planning and MoveAbout

Marilyn’s Way Groups decided to do two habits this month.  That is Menu Planning and MoveAbout.  I think it is a wonderful idea!  

What I am going to write about today is “Simple Awareness.”  When you think about it the two habits really do go together.  This week I am giving myself a shot at both.  It is no secret my weakness is Menu Planning and now that it has gotten colder and I can’t be outside as much I also need to be aware of my MoveAbouts.

I have done Walkabouts in the spring/summer/fall but for me with having Fibromyalgia, I have a hard time doing walkabouts in the winter.  I just can’t seem to stay warm enough.  I had to get rid of my stepper climber.  A part broke and didn’t feel safe enough to use it.  My home is really too small to have a piece of exercise equipment in it.  Of course I have bands and weights.  What I don’t have is a cheering section and that is what most of us lack.  I am going to buy  Fit And Strong Jane Fonda’s Prime Time.  It has two low impact routines, 20 minutes each.  It is based on stretches and and simple exercises.  It is easy but complete.  This is where I want to start out.  Eventually I will go back to the high school gym to workout but for now, this DVD was recommended by one of the members in Walkabout Marilyn’s Way group.

Awareness = Accountability and a Cheering Section!  We flysisters do this well with our homes.  Let’s do it for our bodies!

November’s Habits! Meal Planning and MovingAbout!

Welcome to November 2012!  I came to a very big realization this morning.  Flylady calls them God Breezes.  Whatever this was really got me psyched up!  Earlier this morning it was the opposite “Wow” it is November 1st without much excitement.  In fact it felt more like “Dread.”   Why?  Because with all the holidays coming up it is sure to add on unnecessary pounds for me.  I can only explain that sugar is not my friend and when it gets ahold of me, along come the fats and other carbohydrates.

Now, it is proven that we can’t lose much weight by simply dieting and I hate that word.  In order to see results that gives us the strength to continue is “MovingAbout!”  We have to move in order to burn those calories off.

We also need to eat enough calories for our bodies to be efficient.  So how will we do it with Meal Planning and the upcoming holidays?  Many of us bake for the holidays too.  How do we keep control from eating all of these baked goodies?  Can we still have a cookie here and there if we watch the other things we eat?  These are questions I am asking myself.

The Big Realization Hit Me Today!!
Whatever could it be?  Well, we just finished Halloween.  This involved lots of treats in the form of candy.  You know how they always have something that is the gateway for habits, I am thinking Halloween is the “Gateway” to additional pounds!

In 22 days we celebrate Thanksgiving.  It has a great meaning giving us thanks for the bountiful harvest. The thing is that is something that has been tied together with Thanksgiving.  I wonder if it sometimes gives us permission to eat more?  After that December rolls around and it is Christmas Parties with all kinds of goodies loaded with calories.

In 54 days is Christmas Eve day and then 55th day from today is Christmas Day.  Are you beginning to see where I am going with this?  Seven days later is New Years Eve and none other than another party that involves food.

Of course January 1st we say we are going on that “Diet” for our New Years Resolution.  But wait!  In 45 days it is Valentines Day.  Chocolates!

The thing is, none of us can can keep from a good markdown sale!  Yes with each holiday, candy and chocolates getting marked down and we just have to buy them while on sale!   Are you beginning to feel as crazy as I am at this point?  It is like we don’t even have a chance at maintaining our weight or let alone try to lose weight.  At this point of realization I feel like screaming!

Awareness
Isn’t that a beautiful word right about now?  It is to me.  It is helping me “Snap” out of all of these upcoming parties involved with all this glorious food to someone like me that is going to have to learn to look at food differently if I am ever going to get a chance at losing the weight I have gained in a short period of time.  If I can get that off and even maintain my weight through the holidays, I would be excited about that as well.

Are you with me at looking at this year’s holidays differently?  I hope so because I know there are plenty of you in the same situation as me.  And then there are some that are in menopause like myself that makes everything difficult as well.

I won’t be writing every day on the subject.  It will be when I get some realizations and want to update. I will try to make it at least a weekly blog on the subject and I am looking for guest bloggers on the subject that are more educated than me at this whole thing that involves something we “Have to Have” on a daily basis in order to survive.  It is just learning the choices and knowing we are approaching the time of year where “Sabotage” can easily sneak its way into our eating habits.

I am feeling like I have a better handle on the upcoming holidays just by becoming “Aware” of what I did on this first day of November.  I am rather excited about taking a different approach at it this year!  What about you?

When Did You Start To FLY?

One of my members in Marilyns Way asked this question.  I feel it is a question worth writing about.  When I write this it will be my version and how I came to understand how I interpret Flylady.  Everyone has the right to disagree or agree with what I am about to write, including Flylady.

Many of us are looking for ways to take care of our homes so they look like those on TV.  Or maybe we have Born Organized friends because as you know opposites attract.  So we wonder what is wrong with us?  Why can’t we keep our homes in order?

That is a very vast question and I am not going to expand on this with this blog.  It would be for another one.

What I want to focus on is “When Did You Start To FLY?”  I believe in my whole heart is when you first found out and laid eyes on Flyady.  That is when your journey began.  I don’t want to hear it was on and off because once you find Flylady.  Why?  Because she has a way of taking your hand and helping you along your way.  Sure, you may look at other systems and that is natural.  The thing is that for some reason you simply cannot forget about Flylady.  She has a way of saying things that no others can say.  She loves the sentence, “You Cannot Organize Clutter.  You Can Only Get Rid Of It.”  But, but, we say.  And then it’s but, but we say until we finally realize this is the only way we are going to begin to have any normalcy when it comes to our homes.  This in turn gives us a chance with relationships with others.

So, the next time someone asks you, “When Did You Start To Fly” answer with confidence the minute you even heard of Flylady.  That is where you started to fly.  It may not be with full force all of the time and I don’t even think it is possible.  We as humans like to stop and question things just like our children will and try something only to come back and understand what you taught them is your foundation.  I don’t care what background you came from.  We all start somewhere.  So ask yourself this.  When someone asks when were you born, do you say on and off since 1959 in my case?  No, you say 1959.  Next time someone asks you “When Did You Start To Fly?”  Answer with the year you found Flylady and no off and on kind of stuff.  That type of answer simply keeps you from moving forward in your journey to FLY.  And what does FLYing really mean?  “Finally Loving Yourself, Silly!”  Try to let go of the buts, when Flylady and your flysisters suggest something they have learned from Flylady and just try it! By trying, it means you are taking action and isn’t that what we all have to do if we are ever going to get our homes in order however long it takes us to?  According to Flylady and I finally agree is you will have comfortable homes when you stop organizing your clutter.  Just get rid of it!  Then it seems like your world opens up.  You are out of the prison you created for yourself and how you get out of this prison is with the help of Flylady and we flysisters like myself that believes in Flylady lessons that I write blogs about her and her lessons to help you find your own way.  I guess you could say “I’m FLYwashed!”  And I might add, it is a great place to be!  Next time someone asks you “When Did You Start To FLY” hold your head up high and say the year you first found out about Flylady.  That is when your journey started.  It doesn’t matter what stage you are in.  It just matters that you found Flylady in 2005 is my example and be proud no matter what level you are at and just continue to “Declutter Something Everyday”, more when you can and start to live your life!
