I am taking the time to write about an ‘Off Day’. Guess What! They Happen! I am experiencing one today! I am not happy about it because I did have a list of things I planned to do. How am I going to get around this?
Allow Some Time To Stew
I allowed myself an hour to stew in it. Looking back, I could have gotten the job done in 15 minutes.
When something doesn’t go right, the best thing is to review the past. Last night I went to bed plenty of time. For some reason my dog ‘Trixie’ couldn’t get settled. There was something outside that wouldn’t. We were up every hour for the first 4 hours of sleep. The next time I woke up, it was 11:30 am! I can’t even remember the last time I slept this late! It has got to be over 5 years at least!
Thank You 9 Habits!
Old habits die hard. Yes they do! Don’t let anyone say different! I have been getting Dressed To Shoes each consecutive day since March 1, 2011. This happened because I took a personal challenge.
The crazy thing is that I still had to do the ‘OLD, OLD’ behavior. I had to stew in it. Longer than needed though, why? Because my ‘Trusty 9 Habits Are In Place’.
I am finding many don’t have the skills of taking a problem and carrying it toward a solution. The following is an example of my Problem/Solving skills that I was able to get myself ready for the day.
Crap! I overslept! Now What?
(Note I did have to stew in this part for an hour using the last 15 minutes Problem/Solution tactics going.)
Spring is right around the corner! It is the time of year when everything comes to life again. Why not do some weeding in your closet and drawers to let the clothes you LOVE shine through?
Many Ways To Declutter Clothes!
With all the information at our fingertips, there are many ways to declutter our clothes. One asks that we take them all out of our closet and drawers and try each one one to see if it brings us joy. I say, if you have time to do this, Go For It!
I had to get honest with myself based on the history of my decluttering practices that this would not be a realistic way for me to go.
I have learned it is more important to keep my home going by way of the 9 Habits Of Marilyn’s Way. These 9 habits must always be the priority before we take on a big project like decluttering our clothes.
I am sure you have heard this phrase, “Now, where was I?” Today with social media at the touch of our fingertips, many think this phrase before even saying it out loud. That is when the trouble begins…
It Happened To Me Today
I experienced this very thing this morning. It started out with this thought, “I wonder what ‘bulletproof coffee’ tastes like? I will check it out on my Facebook Timeline.”
Normally I like to have my first 2 cups of coffee all to myself. I find it helps set the tone of the day for me. Not today. Instead I had to fire up my Facebook timeline to find the recipe.
I got the recipe and gave it a whirl. Not too bad I think. The next thought is, “I better let my facebook friends know my opinion on ‘bulletproof coffee’. I will post it and then get back to my usual morning routine.”
Fast forward 2 hours. The most activity I have done is get up, walk to the coffee pot to get another cup of coffee and right back to my computer.
My next thought was, “Wow! Look at those pink appliances!” As a child, I remember getting a pink sink, stove and refrigerator for Christmas one year. Now I have to Google it and find out, but first… let me find the pink sink I pinned on my Kitchen Sinks In History Board“.
As I went to Pinterest the following thought came next, “I wonder if I can find the photo of me the Christmas I got the sink, stove and refrigerator set.” I found the sink on Pinterest easy enough. Next, go look for that photo…
That thought saved me! I got up from the computer to get the photo. It gave me a chance to look at the time and break the spell Facebook had over me. But first…
I Wasn’t Expecting To Write A Blog Post Today
I scanned the photo so I could put it on this post. I did have other plans like doing some decluttering before all of my time will be spent outside in the garden. Yet here I am…
My Friends Are Right
It appears that I have been on this type of – ‘One thing leads to another, but first…’ mode. One moment it was March 1st. Tomorrow is the last full week of March. I look around and I can honestly say I have nothing to show of any progress in my home.
There are other parts of the system that I have not been very good at. It happens to the best of us. After all HOUSEKEEPING NEVER ENDS! The best we can do is not try to ‘Catch Up’. Instead, ‘Pick Up Where We Left Off’.
Time For A Change
I admit the ‘One Thing Leads To Another, But First…’ mode has been consuming me this month. What made me think I needed a change is ‘Now Where Was I?’ mode had also entered my psyche.
How Can I Recover?
It’s simple. I am giving myself a ‘Marilyn Week’ FREE of ‘Social Media’ during the last full week of March. It’s rather funny how I came to this decision… You guessed it!
‘One Thing Leads To Another, But First…’ mode followed by… ‘Now Where Was I?’
Yes, I will miss my friends, groups, pages and this blog. Never fear. It is just a week. My next thought is, ‘I wonder if I can really be away from social media for a week?’ I think you all know where this is going, so I am ending my quirky blog post for today. After all, I am out of COFFEE!
If you enjoyed this post let me know. Please SHARE with others as I know there are many of you that have or are going through the same thing. May it entertain your day.
It’s Gardening Season and during this time my kitchen can take a beating. I am constantly in and out of it as the Kitchen is the ‘Heart of the Home’.
Yesterday I wrote about my ‘3 Day/3 Week/3 Load Limit’. This is a way to help me when life gets in the way. After 3 Days of not doing all of the 9 habits, it is then time to stop everything and focus on doing a 45 minute ‘Kitchen Cha Cha Cha’ 15 minutes at a time. The following is my starting point and will show you my 15 minutes at a time progress.
This is a tutorial for educational purpose only. I write about doing things in real time and have learned to be realistic by practicing this method.
My starting point. I start at my Launch Pad working clockwise and top to bottom. I start with the first Cha. It is throwing away everything that has no value. The next Cha is to put away the items that have a home and to group the like items together. The last Cha is give away in which this session I don’t have anything.
Here is the other angle.
After 15 minutes of Kitchen Cha Cha Cha! Above I explained how I did it.
This is after 30 minutes. You see I am making progress.
After 30 minutes I was getting tired. I had put 3 days of hard work into gardening earlier and am not at the top of my game. I move forward with a promise of a 30 minute break that includes lunch.
After 45 minutes the kitchen is in working order again. I added photos of some of the things I did during this time.
This is my ‘Dance Card’ or Control Journal. Some days I get lots filled in and some days not. Most of it is by memory now.
This is my PTL Gardening Book. I have it by zones to help me stay on top of taking care of gardens and the yard.
Part of what was in my kitchen were seeds I still want to plant. I decided to corral them and place in this container I can take back and forth as I continue to plant. These are ‘Moonflowers’ that have been soaking overnight for easier germination.
I shined my stove top. I shined my sink!
I even shined my mirror!
I shined my coffee pot, (not shown) and my microwave.
This is my blogging PTL book. I am learning so many new things I have to keep track of.
And here is what is left from the paper clutter scattered around the kitchen earlier. I plan to spend at least 30 minutes on that today.
I have my 9 habits made up as a photo of my ‘Bleeding Heart’ plant. It you would like a copy I will have my Etsy Shop set up soon and you will be able to purchase them. It is a nice guide that will go with any decor. The power of 3.
You can see I have some of my favorite things on my refrigerator. You will notice I also have a copy of ‘What To De-Clutter?’ guide. I am thinking of taking a photo of my flowers and make it into a photo and have them available for sale.
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial of a ‘Kitchen Cha Cha Cha!’ part of the Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! System.
Any thoughts or questions? Feel free to comment. I am a real person that did this tutorial in real time and I would LOVE to hear from you!
I also have a secret group called Marilyn’s Way where a group of us support each other while learning the 9’s. If you are interested in joining, send me a friend request at http://www.facebook.com/marilynkayfoster and I will be happy to add you to the group! If you can send me a quick message that you would like to join the group. It is ‘Secret’ and that means it is by invitation only and does not show up in the search for groups.
Have you ever really given much thought to the United States Phone Number? There are 3 parts with groups of 3 digits in the first 2 parts. The last part is 4 digits.
How I Applied This Concept To My System
First, some history. Back in 1985 I began my outside sales career selling pagers or beepers. Remember them? In order to get good with my job I had to get good with phone numbers. I only had to remember 1 area code. When we issued the phone numbers we would have a prefix that was the same as we issued numbers out individually. Therefore once I memorized the first 2 parts of the phone number, all I had to do is memorize 4 digits. Not only did I remember them but what was easy is the numbers would be handed out in sequential order.
The following poster is the System set up in Quadrants where each one we spend a certain amount of time in.
What Happens When This Routine Gets Out Of Sync?
Deal with it 3 things at a time! Don’t let any daily habits go undone beyond 3 days. Weekly habits stay under the 3 week umbrella. Monthly Events 3 months
Finally, do not let Laundry build up past 3 loads.
I want you to take time to think of this method. Your brain will thank you. You will still get as much done without the stress of having to remember everything. At this writing session it is morning. All I have had to concentrate on was:
1. Getting Dressed To Shoes
2. Swish & Swipe
3. What’s For Dinner?
After lunch, I will begin:
4. Load Of Laundry
5. Declutter Something/Anything
6. Make Dinner Early
By doing this you will have enough energy left to:
7. Shine Your Sink
8. Lay Out Clothes
9. Have Launch Pad Ready
You could actually have all of that done by 9 pm. Then the rest of the time you can do whatever you like. BUT if you get out of sync like we all do at one time or another remember the power of 3 with the :
3 Day/3 Week/3 Month/3 Load Limit
It Is The ‘Cushion’ You Have Been Looking For!

Today I am sharing it with you!
I would love to hear what you think of this theory! Please Comment. Thank You.
The only thing that went wrong this morning before Direct TV showed up to do an upgrade is I wore my watch while taking a shower! Luckily it is waterproof!
I am so happy I have gotten to the place where I can say my home is company ready and I am not having to constantly be apologizing for the mess OR staying up all night the day before to get my home in shape.
I bet you are wondering how I do it. Over three years ago it wasn’t the case. Dishes would be piled up and laundry backed up. Lots of unopened mail stacked up. So what is different?
I tried various systems on the internet that said you could get rid of clutter and have a clean house in X amount of days. I would get started and none of them would work because it would be something different to do each day for 31 days. By day 8 or 9 I would quit.
The closest I got into a system was Flylady. She has a wealth of information. Many have been successful with it.
Myself on the other hand could not do all of what Flylady asked because of being ADD and also having Fibromyalgia. The combination takes up way too much energy to get through everything.
Do I decide to throw in the towel? No. I was still sick and tired of living among clutter and always having dirty dishes in the sink and smelly laundry in the wash.
I set out to find a way to have the basics done each day every day. This is where Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! was born. I read about the power of three. It states the most a person can remember similtaneously is 3 things. Our days are already broken into 3 routines. They are Morning, Afternoon and Before Bedtime. Easy enough to remember.
What if there were 3 habits for each routine that one practices each day every day that involve yourself, your family and your home? Is this possible? The answer is yes!
What if you began to practice a total of 9 habits each day as stated above and it allows you to gain free time? Is that possible? The answer is yes again!
Martin Luther King Jr has a quote “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” So many times we as humans think we have to see the whole staircase before we can move forward.
My next question is this. Is there any particular subject you can say you know everything there is to know about it? If you are honest, you will say no. Why? Because as a human race we are constantly evolving. It is one of our strong desires.
Along with the 9 habits there are weekly habits for specific days to focus on. I give you the habits, you decide the days!
Lastly, we focus on our homes one zone at a time each week. There are a total of 5 zones. This is where we declutter first and detail clean second.
In a nutshell there are 3 routines each day and 3 parts of the system with a built in 3 day/3 load limit that I will cover in the future. Don’t worry. It isn’t complicated. It is just something I built into the system that gives one breathing room.
On Mondays I write about the system in the Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! Series. I have covered 5 weeks to date. My goal is to give you just a little information that will stay with you verses the other. Therefore you don’t have to see the entire staircase in order to take the first step. I will be here to guide you.
If you are tired of searching for the perfect system to declutter and clean your home, there is no perfect system. The closest you will get is by establishing daily habits that take care of yourself, your family and your home. From there you can design your system your way and that is what Marilyn’s Way is all about. I hope you will join me.
I also have a group on Facebook you can belong to so you have support. Just let me know here by commenting in the comments section of this blog and I will get you in. It is by invitation only for ones that are serious about learning an easy way to take care of yourself, your family and your home so you may live and enjoy your life!
P.S. If you know of someone who is overwhelmed, living in CHAOS and searching for something to make their life easier, please share this by clicking below. I have over 3 years in the archives and am sure there is something for everyone.
This week we are starting with habit number one – Getting Dressed To Shoes. I am not asking you to get all doled up. I am simply asking you to get out of your pajamas and into some clothes. This sets your mind up to get to work. Some may say they can declutter and clean in their pajamas just fine. Can you really? What about the knock on the door? Maybe Timmy became ill at school. Would you be ready? These things happen in real life.
If you are already getting dressed to shoes each day, hooray for you! It may be because you have to go to work every day. If you are a stay at home mom aren’t you also working?
Can You Be Successful With The Series Without Getting Dressed To Shoes?
The answer is yes because you are successful for just being you! If the thought of getting dressed to shoes appalls you, don’t stop. Just proceed to the next habit which I will reveal next Monday.
For those who want to give it a try, become aware how you feel when you are dressed to shoes verses dressing in pajamas. Jot the notes down in your notebook/3 ring binder.
This week’s goal is focusing on ‘Getting Dressed To Shoes’ each day. If you stumble, pick yourself up and begin again. One thing I have learned in this journey is there are many beginnings and stumbles. It is simply your way of learning what does or doesn’t work for you. I am simply giving you a set of guidelines. It is up to you to write your own ‘Dance Card’. Having a notebook or 3 ring binder for notes makes it easier to get there. We all learn differently.
Tell me how you have been able to change this habit and how you did it by commenting below. I would love to hear!
I always get excited the day I plant my vegetable garden. So much hope and anticipation is formed. How will my garden be this year?
I have to say since I reclaimed gardening, I have been very fortunate with having successful gardens the past three years.
What will my 4th year back into gardening be like? Stick around. I plan to keep you updated to the miracle of planting a seed that grows into a plant to harvesting the vegetables at the end of gardening season.
It really is a ‘Circle Of Life’. I think that is why I am so fascinated by it. Without further ado, I am headed out to the garden!
I was out there for 45 minutes and it is hot! It is 89 degrees. Time for a different game plan.
Luckily I know of a different way to get the garden in without getting heat stroke. It is something I take from Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! System. It is called 15ers or 15 minute spurts of doing something and then a 15 minute break. Now you wouldn’t think one could get very much done doing it that way. For me having fibromyalgia and a chance of heat exhaustion I have no choice.
Three years ago when I decided to take up gardening again after being ill for 5 years I knew if I wanted to do it I was going to have to come up with a plan my way. That is how the name Marilyn’s Way came to be.
I wasn’t going to be able to do it like most gardeners do. Yet, I wasn’t ready to give it up. I wanted to be outdoors in the summer after spending all winter cooped up. I was determined. Instead I have learned to do a little at a time and then come back into my home to take a break and do one of my nine habits I do each day to keep my home from getting cluttered and disorganized.
I am cooled off and hydrated with Powerade Zero. Off to the garden I go again. I want to stay out there for 30 minutes but if it is only 15 minutes I can handle I will do it that way. I have the garden plan in my head so now I am ready to start planting.
Stay tuned. Tomorrow I will show you what I get done. Happy Gardening!
Will you be gardening this year? I would love to know how you do it your way!
What a week this has been! Monday morning I started to town to take my blazer in to get fixed. The job was going to take longer than expected and the shop asked if they could keep it overnight. What could I say but yes.
Next came problem solving skills. Lily and Fred my dachshund and Maltese were at home 40 miles away. The best solution was for my mom to take me back home where I would load up my life including the computer but not the kitchen sink , bring the dogs in and spend the night. It actually wasn’t too bad gathering all the things to take back to town. It is just something I wouldn’t want to do on a weekly basis.
I ended up spending two nights at my mom’s. It wasn’t painful. Actually we had lots of fun. One game that has been running for some time we play together is Skip Bo. We played 5 games total with myself winning 2 and Mom the winner (for now!) having 3 wins.
I also managed to write 3 blogs for you while I was there. I am glad Monday’s blog was written Sunday or I may have been in a pickle. Let’s look at what I covered this week.
2. Weekly Habits On Specific Days With One Being The ‘Weekly Home Mambo’
3. Weekly Zones
I also talked about the importance of freeing oneself from perfectionism and procrastination. It is something we have to work on but it can be done.
I also wrote a blog called Today Is Fibromyalgia Awareness Day. I shared my story on how I happened to get this invisible chronic illness with no cure. Every year May 12th is set aside to help spread awareness. You will find in my story it wasn’t just one thing that contributed to it.
Tuesday – Gardening
Most who love gardening are very anxious to get started in the north central part of the United States. Mother Nature doesn’t seem to want to cooperate so we wait.
What I did do is show you a few plants outside at Mom’s house and then her beautiful violets in bloom inside. The blog was called In A Holding Pattern For Spring. Click on the link to see the green thumb my mom has with violets. They are beautiful.
Wednesday – Lifestyle
I revealed the magic pill in Part Two Of Two Fibromyalgia Isn’t a Death Sentence. Some may agree with me and some not. It is what helped me the most in the 25 years since I was officially diagnosed. I hope to share more of this topic from my perspective for consideration.
That’s the wrap up for the week of May 12th. If there is something you would like me to cover in any of the three categories please comment and see if I can get the high points of it to share with you.
P.S. Do you like the format I am providing with specific subjects on specific days and wrapping it up on Fridays? I am trying to find my voice in the blogging world and appreciate any suggestions you have by writing them in the comments.
See you Monday where I continue to write about Dance Till You FLY! Series that helps you learn how to take care of yourself, your family and your home and garden!
I am going to try something new. I have created a format that will be easy to follow. I am assigning a specific day for one of my three categories I blog about. They are as follows:
The other thing that I decided I would do is specific days I will write about specific subjects. They are as follows:
Mondays – The ins and outs of a ‘flylady simplified system’ that I created called ‘Dance Till You FLY! mw (c) 2014.’ featuring nine non negotiable habits each day every day that help you take care of yourself, your family, and your home and garden. This is the foundation. Weekly zones are also covered where one declutters the first part of the week and detail cleans the second part. Weekly habits for specific days are also an important part of ‘DTYFmw’ and are named in a dance related theme. There is a ‘Weekly Home Mambo’ where one performs seven tasks throughout the home as a way to straighten up from the weekend and start the new week off on the right dance step. I also have events throughout the year where the beginning is all about preparation, the middle just maintaining and the end of the year wrapping up what we learned and to keep from spilling over into the new year. Each Monday I will be breaking up the DTYFmw System and explaining the logic behind it. I absolutely LOVE FlyLady. Because of my limitations from having Fibromyalgia I could not do all that she asks. I wasn’t going to to give up. After a hard lesson to learn for me that you must get ‘Dressed To Shoes’ each day in order to feel better about yourself, was I able to move on to other areas. I will talk about that in the coming weeks.
Tuesdays – Anything to do with my passion ‘Gardening.’ I will take you through the season starting with a seed and ending up with an editable fruit or vegetable that I will either vacuum freeze or can. Tuesdays will be filled with photos once the gardening season begins outside.
Wednesdays – Anything to do with ‘Lifestyle.’ My blog about my great aunt that is 102 years old would fall under this category.
Fridays – ‘Wrapping up’ the week and commenting further from comments that are made on the blogs of the week with links to each blog for easy access to read again or the first time and read others comments.
I hope this will make it easier for you to follow me. I want your experience to be enjoyable. I hope this will work for the both of us in the coming months. Comments are welcome!
