How To Make An Emergency FLYing Kit

I really don’t know why I didn’t think of this before to write as a blog.  Many have been sick with cold and flu this season and it makes it very difficult to FLY.  So what should you do?  I suggest you make a ‘Emergency FLYing Kit.’

What are two things that pile up when you get sick?  Dishes and Laundry.  If you are practicing the ‘Daily 9’s’ it shouldn’t get too bad.  They are the habits that keep you, your family and your home going.   I can’t help you with the laundry but I can with the dishes!

Emergency Flying Kit
That’s right.  It is something to put together ‘before’ you get sick.  It is as follows:

Paper Plates
Plastic Silverware
Plastic Glasses
Three ‘Meal Ideas’ that promote ‘Easy Clean up.’
Some may say using these things are not good for the environment.  I say NOT using them is not good for a sick caregiver such as yourself.  If you had a birthday party you are likely to have some leftover paper plates.  Maybe from the holidays.  Use them up.
I average just two times a week where I will eat a meal on a paper plate.  I have plastic silverware and glasses if I really need them.  It is just me so washing some silverware is no big deal for me.  But if you have a family, the last thing you want to do are dishes.
FLY stands for First Love Yourself others come next.  Do yourself a favor and put a kit together.  Put some napkins in there too.  If you don’t have to worry about all the cleanup you will have to do when you feel better, who knows maybe you just might recover sooner!
I hope you will take this idea seriously.  I live with Fibromyalgia and for me just eating on paper plates a couple of times a week makes a world of difference in my FLYing.

What Was I Thinking??? The Process Of Decluttering

As we go through the process of ‘decluttering’ we all have said this at least once in our lifetime…

What Was I Thinking???

You guessed it. We all have strange things we kept at the time for more than one reason or the other.

In The Beginning…

When we first began to start decluttering most of us were overwhelmed to say the least. For some reason many of us never learned that decluttering is also a natural part of taking care of our home.

It Was In The Memo

As we begin to gain control of our lives again, many of us aren’t ready to see this part. Instead if you were like myself, it was all about ‘Organizing.’

As learned by the FlyLady.
As learned by the FlyLady.

What Is Clutter Anyway?

It is very simple. It is items that as they passed through our hands we couldn’t make a decision as to what we wanted to do with them and think, ‘I will put it here for now’.

Then There Is That Deadline.

We have all experienced this as well. Examples include:

  • The invitation to a wedding that needs to be RSVP’d.
  • The special slip that goes with a particular dress one plans to wear to the wedding.
  • Just trying to get out the door to work or an appointment.
  • Throwing a ‘Birthday Party’.
  • Changing of the seasons preparation.

Here’s A Cheat Sheet!

We all can use a ‘Cheat Sheet’ from time to time to help us get moving. The following are questions we can as ourselves as we declutter.

Valid questions to ask.
Valid questions to ask.

Make Decluttering Fun!

We have to bring joy and fun back into our lives in order to feel any type of peace. Many of us are simply too serious. It is called ‘Lighten Up’ for a reason. That would also include clutter you no longer need.

Have some FUN today and play along with the game:

Donation/Giveaway Box Oh My!

Every home has trash cans in multiple places in the home. We do it to make our lives easier. In fact if we recycle, chances are there is a recycling center set up in the home.

So why don’t we have a Donation/Giveaway Box located somewhere in our home? One of the rules to keep our homes free of clutter is if we bring in something new, naturally something old must go out. And yet we don’t do it. Could it be as simple as having a Donation/Giveaway Box located in let’s say our laundry room?

In my Marilyn’s Way Secret Group January is devoted to the 31 Day Cha Cha Cha Event! It involves throwing away, giving away and putting away  items in our home. When we do sessions of decluttering it is best to have three boxes set up for the task + a timer.

Then there is the time when as you go about your day, you may run into something that you wonder why you bought it and the thought “I need to get rid of this.” thought comes to play. Problem is we won’t act on it because we haven’t created a place to put those items like we do with a trash can. When trash cans are full, naturally they go outside for garbage pick up.

Clock for Marilyns Way Its Challenge Timename4

What is the challenge? It is to stop what you are doing and find a box or a tote and put a sign on it that says Donations/Give Away and place it in your Laundry Room. Next time you find something that you can give away, put it in the box and when the box gets full put it in your car and take it with you to drop off during your next Doo Wop Errand Day! It really is that simple.

The Great Declutter Your Kitchen Cha Cha Cha Event!

November is here and this is the month that many from my secret group Marilyn’s Way focus on the kitchen. It is a great time because the holidays are upon us and it makes it easier to do holiday cooking and baking.

More importantly it helps one to get dinner on the table and easy clean up. That is what many are looking for during the holidays. The trick is to become creative. While you are doing your kitchen declutter why not eat on paper plates a few times a week. You can use the time you would be doing dishes by way of decluttering.

Kitchen Triangle Work Area

This is where one should start and work your way outward. Keep only the things you use on a daily basis in this area. That would be things like silverware, utensils, dishes, pots, pans, bakeware and basics like flour, sugar, coffee, tea, spices, salt and pepper.

There are many sites that will show you step by step. They are great if you have the time. My philosophy has always been each individual knows what they need to work on and make this the focus. I love these monthly events. If you are a SHE (sidetracked home executive) like me, excitement and energy is at the highest the beginning of the month. Plan accordingly.

If you want support simply join my secret group Marilyn’s Way. The instructions follow.

Can you believe the holidays are gaining momentum? One thing for sure this weekend, most of us will fall back 1 hour because Daylight Savings Time ends at 2 am!

Garden Fresh Vegetable Soup

I love this time of year when I can throw together a fresh vegetable soup that come right out of my garden. I really don’t have a recipe. I just start chopping!

There is one thing I do different. In order to enhance the flavor of the soup, I like to dice up onions, peppers, garlic and celery and then saute them first in olive oil.

Reboot Your Closet!

The weekend is almost here. Many will have activities outside the home. You look in your closet and say, ‘I don’t have anything to wear!’ Come on. You can’t tell me you have never said that before.

I used to say it all the time until I got my closet organized. Then life happens. Slowly but surely one day I stand in front of my closet and say, ‘I don’t have anything to wear!’

The Obvious Times One Would Say This Statement

  • Special Function (Wedding, Funeral, Graduation, Holidays, Vacation)
  • Gaining or Losing Weight
  • Seasons Changing

Right now for most of us whether it’s ‘Down Under’ or not, the seasons are a changing. What better time than to give your closet some lovin’ by doing a ‘Cha Cha Cha’.  It simply is a fun way to say ‘Throw Away, Give Away, Put Away’.

When you finish each category the next thing to do is ‘Deal With It’. After you go through the closet looking for anything to ‘Throw Away’ take that bag out to the trash no matter what the quantity is. Everyone has something to throw away that is in a closet. Remember the recent ‘Stash And Dash’?  Continue with each category.

What You Can Do This Weekend

Get your ‘timer’ out. Set it for 5, 10 or 15 minutes and make time to do this as you are ‘Getting Dressed To Shoes’. In this day and age we are learning that it can be difficult to block off amounts of time dedicated for projects like this. Instead we have to learn how to do it in ‘Bits Of Time’.

Put some music on and ‘Cha Cha Cha’ this weekend. While you are at it, ‘Lay Out Your Clothes’ for each day and ‘Dance Till You FLY!’

It’s Monday Again!

I have to tell you, so far the month of September has been stressful for me. I was dealing with an ill dog companion that resulted in his passing. I am working on a blog to share my experience in hopes it will help others. Look for it in the middle of the week.

It’s Monday Again!

How did Monday come so fast? Yesterday I buried my Maltese dog named Fred. What will the coming week bring? I suspect more grieving with some feelings of peace by the end of the week.

Today is Merengue Planning Day for ‘Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! System. How involved does the planning have to entail? It is totally up to you. I know my planning from week to week fluctuates depending on how many activities I have.

I am not asking to write down every detailed item today that you plan to do this week. Merengue Planning Day is more a day to decide what is in the following form.

A form to help you plan your week.
A form to help you plan your week.

Use this form to ‘Map Out Your Week’. Scratch notes on it. Use it as a worksheet that you can refer to for the coming week.

The following describes how Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! System (c) 2014 has three levels with level one being the most important. It is based on levels where the first one needs to be done before you move to the next. Some weeks you may only be able to do the first level. That is okay. You are moving forward. That is all any of us can ask for and commit to. Establishing the first level of the system makes it so much easier to move on to the next. The following are the 3 levels to Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! System (c) 2014.

3 Levels Of Marilyn's Way Dance Till You FLY! System

Not so bad when it is laid out this way is it? Born Organized would have figured this out almost immediately. They know how to set up a structure. Most of us don’t.

S.H.E. Sidetracked Home Executives
S.H.E. Sidetracked Home Executives

We tend to be the SHE’s of the group. Now there is nothing wrong with being a SHE. We just have to learn how to plan what works better for us.

I give you suggestions to the order of the 9’s. You can take these 9 habits and put them in a different order. Just make sure you give it your best shot each day to do all 9. Once you are comfortable with them will come the weekly habits for specific days. Again, you choose the days for each of the habits that will work best for you. I simply give you a suggestion.

The second level is ‘Weekly Zone Events’. Our homes have five zones where we spend a week on a specific zone for a specific week of the month. It is the ‘Maintenance Level’ of the system.

The third level is your ‘Seasonal Monthly Events’ where some of them will be bi-annual. When you have the first 2 levels scheduled for your day, this level will be do what you can. Something is always better than nothing.

The 3rd level is really for the group to come together and make each other accountable. I selected the events for certain times of the year that we would get the most mileage and make sense.

Tuesday is ‘Freestyle Day’. I wanted to get this post to you earlier for Monday. Since it is later, I will give you Tuesday’s weekly habit form to follow as a guide.

While I am at it I will give you Wednesday’s ‘Anti Dilly Dally Day’ form you can use to make notes.

Anti Dilly Dally Form

I hope I have explained how Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! System (c) 2014  works. There are many other systems that are in greater detail. Most of them are for ‘Born Organized’ and not ‘Sidetracked Home Executive’ like we are. Will I ever be ‘Born Organized’? No and frankly I wouldn’t want to. That is a personal choice. I spent way too many years trying to be something I am not.

If you have trouble staying with a system I invite you to try Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! System (c) 2014 and see if it will work for you!

Banana Pepper Poppers Cha Cha Cha!

I love to grow all kinds of peppers.  My banana pepper plant has had a high yield.  Why not try to make some Banana Poppers!

Where did the term ‘Poppers’ originate that can be another word for appetizers?  I decided to google it.  I found a link for Jalapeno Poppers that will give you the information if you tend to be a curious person like myself.

As I said I have had a bumper crop of banana peppers so I thought why not use them in place of jalapeno peppers.  I found a recipe called Baked Banana Pepper Poppers.  I don’t have all the ingredients that the recipe calls for so why not just improvise!

I am going to replace the cheddar cheese for colby monterey cheese.  I will omit the bacon and go light on the seasonings.  When you live 40 miles from town you learn to adjust.

Next up is to cut in half vertically and remove the seeds carefully.  Just to be safe, I am wearing vinyl gloves.  I once cleaned some jalapeno peppers without gloves and the pain I had to endure after was horrible!  Learned my lesson.

Launch Pad Ready!

Some have started school already but most will be starting this coming week.  One of the 9 habits of Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! is to always have your ‘Launch Pad Ready’.

What Is A Launch Pad?

A launch pad can be as simple as knowing where your keys are to having a command center, hooks for coats, book bags, and a clearing for whatever else needs to be ready for the coming day.

launch pad ready 002blogThis is my ‘Launch Pad’ for today.  A launch pad can also be a way to focus on what is important to get done for the day as well.  I am a gardener and it is ‘Canning Season’.  To some it may look like a cluttered mess.  To me it means I must allot time in my day to put away the beans that have already been canned, freeze the sugar snap peas, make room in the refrigerator for the cucumbers and the zuchinni and start snapping green beans to get ready to can again.

launch pad doctorSomeone that works away from the home’s launch pad will consist of a purse, keys, briefcase, lunch, any returns or donation bags that can be done on the way home from work.

school launchpad2Yet a home that has school aged children will consist of keys, purse, book bags, coats, lunches, projects to take to school.

Whatever your plans are for the next day, create a ‘Launch Pad Ready’ area in your home.  It can be as simple as ‘Where are your keys?’ to lining everything up that you plan to do so you can get an early start on the projects and ‘Dance Till You FLY!’

Overcoming Feeling Behind

During the summer months, feeling behind can get the best of me if I don’t learn how to pace myself.  I have my regular home routines of the 9 habits from Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! System, gardening and lawn care, and any summer projects.  This year the summer project is painting my house.

Today I was beginning to have those feelings of “Feeling Behind”.  Where does it come from?  It was time for me to find out.

It is this never ending cycle we have come to learn.  The problem is it becomes normal, familiar and automatic.  Yes, it becomes ‘Habit’.

I will be honest with you.  The feelings of always ‘feeling behind’ has been the biggest challenge to correct for me. This morning I caught myself in the cycle once again.

How Did I Get Here Again?

It always amazes me when I get into this state of mind.  I am wondering how I got here, where in fact I already know.

I Went Off The Beaten Path

This summer I have an extra project besides gardening and taking care of the yard.  The project involves painting my house.  I have a good start at it.  Then it rained for a few days.  Now I have had to wait a few days to let the wood dry out to prevent the paint from bubbling.  I got to tell you.  I was really getting into the zone!  The problem was I was skipping a few of my Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! 9 habits I practice daily.

One can get away with skipping a habit here and there but when one doesn’t do a particular habit for 3 days, the 4th day we are naturally going to get that feeling of ‘feeling behind’.  It becomes the never ending cycle again.

Not only this, but the weekly habits I practice haven’t been consistent the past couple of months.  It is in these habits I am now learning one can skip the weekly habits on specific days only once in awhile.  It is the weekly habits that must stay consistent if we ever want to overcome the feeling of ‘feeling behind’.

Be Open To Self-Awareness

The only way one can find a solution to every problem is by becoming self-aware.  The greatest gift we can give ourselves is ‘self-awareness’ by accepting the fact we are in fact human and there are going to be times we get off the beaten path.  If during the time we are practicing our daily, weekly and monthly habits we learn to F. L. Y. by First Love Yourself in order to love others, those feelings of feeling behind will show up at your door maybe for a morning verses having the ‘feeling behind’ become overwhelming and lasting over a week.

There are some other ways to overcome ‘feeling behind’.  I will be writing about it in a future post.  For now, the following are 9 Daily Habits with 1 weekly habit and 1 monthly habit called ‘zone work’.  If you can begin to practice these, I promise you will overcome ‘feeling behind’.
