October Event Paper Clutter

October is Paper Clutter! Yes, you heard it! Paper Clutter! We all have it. In the electronic age, we still have paper clutter. Why? Many of us have not gone to paperless. It is that simple. Many don’t feel comfortable. There is something about getting that envelope in the mail to make it real.

Could Busyness Be The Reason For Your Paper Clutter?

As a kid, I used to like to play the game, ‘Secretary’ where I loved having piles of paper on my desk. At the time it made me feel important. Of course all I did in the game was move the piece of paper from one side of my make shift desk to the other side never really looking at it.

This is where I developed the bad habit of:

Busyness

It started rather innocently. Today I would like nothing better than to get rid of this habit. What do I do I do instead? I find myself moving the piece of paper from one side of my desk to another.

Most say to deal with the newest incoming mail first. And that is where my problem lies. What is it about it that I don’t like opening up my mail that I end up with this huge pile of paperwork in a month’s time?

Bills & Medicare

I am on Disability for Fibromyalgia and Arthritis.  I WISH I could work full time. But no one will hire me because I can only work for about 30 minutes and then I have to break for 15. This is where the bills pile up. I don’t get enough each month to pay all of my bills.

I would like to point out that this money I get from the government is what I have paid into. Many think it is a government handout. It is not. I get a disability check based on the income I was making at the time of my disability. This was back in 2002 and the monthly check worked. Today with inflation it no longer does.

For some reason Medicare can’t seem to say everything they want to say on one piece of paper. And all letters from them look the same so each has to be opened up. I used to file it away, thus all the paperwork. Today it gets recycled but not before it seems to create a big pile.

In October 2012 I did a major Paper Declutter and wrote about it for 31 days. Because of my technically challenged skills I haven’t been able to get those blogs moved over to here. The following photo is what I did get rid of and it was very freeing.

Finish It Up Fridays!

Recently I have found a name and a description for the 5 working days of the week. I like the addition to Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! System. Of course it is always optional and can be used for variety.

Why I decided to have some fun names for each day of the working week is to provide structure. Remember Sundays many families have sat down to a chicken dinner. When one thought of Sunday they immediately associated it with church and chicken dinner. Today I am writing about Friday.

‘Finish It Up Fridays’ is simply that! Whatever projects you have been working on during the week, today is the day to finish them up so Saturday can be fun time and Sunday a day of rejuvenating yourself. Examples of ‘Finish It Up Fridays’ are:

  • Undone Paperwork With A Deadline
  • Balancing Your Checkbook
  • Any Household Project You Started During The Week
  • List Is Endless

If we learn to plan our lives one week at a time, the days and months go so much better. Why? Because breaking things up by days, weeks, months, quarters, and years makes ones life a bit more manageable and isn’t that what we all are searching for?

Kitchen Cha Cha Cha!

It’s Gardening Season and during this time my kitchen can take a beating.  I am constantly in and out of it as the Kitchen is the ‘Heart of the Home’.

Yesterday I wrote about my ‘3 Day/3 Week/3 Load Limit’.  This is a way to help me when life gets in the way.  After 3 Days of not doing all of the 9 habits, it is then time to stop everything and focus on doing a 45 minute ‘Kitchen Cha Cha Cha’ 15 minutes at a time.   The following is my starting point and will show you my 15 minutes at a time progress.

This is a tutorial for educational purpose only.  I write about doing things in real time and have learned to be realistic by practicing this method.

Kitchen during gardening 018 My starting point.  I start at my Launch Pad working clockwise and top to bottom.  I start with the first Cha.  It is throwing away everything that has no value.  The next Cha is to put away the items that have a home and to group the like items together.  The last Cha is give away in which this session I don’t have anything.

Kitchen during gardening 019 Here is the other angle.

After 15 minutes 001 After 15 minutes of Kitchen Cha Cha Cha!  Above I explained how I did it.

After 15 minutes 002 Other angle.

After 30 Minutes 001 This is after 30 minutes.  You see I am making progress.

After 30 Minutes 002Other angle.

After 30 minutes I was getting tired.  I had put 3 days of hard work into gardening earlier and am not at the top of my game.  I move forward with a promise of a 30 minute break that includes lunch.

After 45 minutes 001 After 45 minutes the kitchen is in working order again.  I added photos of some of the things I did during this time.

After 45 minutes 002 Other angle

After 45 minutes 003 This is my ‘Dance Card’ or Control Journal.  Some days I get lots filled in and some days not.  Most of it is by memory now.

After 45 minutes 004 This is my PTL Gardening Book.  I have it by zones to help me stay on top of taking care of gardens and the yard.

After 45 minutes 005

Part of what was in my kitchen were seeds I still want to plant.  I decided to corral them and place in this container I can take back and forth as I continue to plant. After 45 minutes 006 These are ‘Moonflowers’ that have been soaking overnight for easier germination.

After 45 minutes 007 I shined my stove top.After 45 minutes 008 I shined my sink!

After 45 minutes 009 I even shined my mirror!

After 45 minutes 010 I shined my coffee pot, (not shown) and my microwave.

After 45 minutes 011 This is my blogging PTL book.  I am learning so many new things I have to keep track of.

After 45 minutes 012And here is what is left from the paper clutter scattered around the kitchen earlier.  I plan to spend at least 30 minutes on that today.

Kitchen during gardening 001 I have my 9 habits made up as a photo of my ‘Bleeding Heart’ plant.  It you would like a copy I will have my Etsy Shop set up soon and you will be able to purchase them.  It is a nice guide that will go with any decor.  The power of 3.

Kitchen during gardening 002You can see I have some of my favorite things on my refrigerator.  You will notice I also have a copy of ‘What To De-Clutter?’ guide.  I am thinking of taking a photo of my flowers and make it into a photo and have them available for sale.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial of a ‘Kitchen Cha Cha Cha!’ part of the Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! System.

3 Things You Can Get Rid Of Today And Make Zone 5 Your Living Room Look Great Again!

The first 6 days of this week we are in Zone 5 the Living Room.  Not often do we get to spend this much time in this zone as it is always the last days of the month in the new week.

I am glad we get to spend this much time this month and it couldn’t have come at a better time.  This is the first of the year and I am going to tell you 3 things that your can get rid of today to make Zone 5 look great again!

 Old Magazines

There is one thing one can be sure of.  Many ideas are repeated in the coming issue or coming year of a magazine.  Magazines are great with using the bait and switch method to get your attention.  They just find another way to word the same thing that people want to hear that encourages them to buy the magazine.  I was great at doing this standing in the grocery line.  I felt I needed a treat for all the hard work I did at grocery shopping.  I wanted something to read to unwind a bit before I would put away my groceries.  Today I don’t do that anymore as I come home to check notifications on Facebook to unwind a bit before I get all the groceries put away.  This doesn’t mean that I don’t have any magazines.  My mom likes to give me month old magazines after she reads them.  Then it is up to me not to let them pile up.  I remember when I kept every magazine.  I had a library of them.  Now I think why?  By today’s standards some may have called me a magazine hoarder.  When I decided to get rid of all of them I was amazed at the space I had gained.  If you have old magazines from last year and you can’t bring yourself to throw them away then cut out your name and address if you get it as a subscription and give them to businesses where you get your oil changed or tires.  They never have magazines for women in those places.  Make someone’s wait easier in the waiting room.

Catalogs
If you have any type of hobby, you are going to have catalogs laying around.  For me it has been seed catalogs because of my passion for gardening and these catalogs sure brighten up the winter for me.  The problem is if I don’t stay on top of it, I could easily accumulate 3 years of catalogs and we all know the price changes from year to year.  These are the ones that have no value to anyone.  Just toss.  Keep this year’s and make a note in your planner when all the seeds and plants you are going to buy for the season and then toss the catalog.

Newspapers
This past year I became the correspondent for local news in my area.  With this I receive a complimentary weekly newspaper.  The only newspapers I had to deal with before was the ones that came in the mail with the grocery ads in it.  I haven’t quite been doing this job for a year yet and I have to be honest.  I haven’t thrown any away.  What I decided is to ask a couple of people I know that don’t get the newspaper and give to them if they want it.  Otherwise some is going to be shredded for my compost pile and the rest tossed.

I am looking at that hot spot right now as I write this blog.  I am going to take a before picture and an after picture for you so I best get busy at taking care of business.

And All Through The House There Arose Such A CLUTTER

It’s that time of year and it is around a week before Christmas. I was reading through my threads on my closed group Marilyn’s Way to find something with her permission to publish what she said.  I know it hit home for me and I am sure many of you out there.  Here is what Christine IsFlying said:

I keep feeling like I’m forgetting something, but I’m guessing that I’m just having flashbacks from the TOTAL CHAOS of Christmas’ past… last second shopping, wrapping ALLLLLL of the gifts of Christmas Eve, the complete DISASTER that used to be in the kitchen from hours on end of baking cookies, Mt. Washmore piled high because I’ve hyper-focused on decorating for Christmas…. GEESH!?!? It makes me almost break out in HIVES just thinking about those Christmas’?!?!? Then, I would have to see the in-laws…. exhausted, stressed out, gray hair, without my nails done, and COMPLETELY GRUMPY from no rest

!

NEVER AGAIN!! I’m glad to say that my Christmas’ haven’t been like that for several/many years (Not sure how long? 5 -6 years maybe?)…

Like the saying goes here in the South…. “IF MAMMA AIN’T HAPPY – AIN’T NOBODY HAPPY”!!!!

YOU deserve the peace and happiness of Christmas too ladies… not just your kids! You are worth it!! Who cares if the entire house is decorated like a Hallmark Card or Martha Stewart’s house!?!?! SIMPLIFY and find the peace of the Holidays!!

FINE is your friend…. PERFECT is your enemy! Embrace “FINE” and let go of perfectionism!

I just LOVED what she had to say.  So this week remember to just breathe and if you are in crisis mode this year, think about how next year you could make you life easier.

Zone Work! There Are Two Kinds! I Understand It Now!

At the bottom of this chart you will see the five zones listed.  Declutter first, Detail Clean next.  Don’t do both in one Zone if you are not READY for it!  In time you will!

I got an epiphany, a realization, an aha moment, a God Breeze as The Flylady calls it!  It doesn’t matter what you call it.  It is just about looking at something I have been looking at for a while but suddenly see it in a whole new light!

Zones
With Flylady we have five zones.  It is based on most of the time the days of the month spread over five weeks.  To make it easy for you, I will list them out taken from the book “Sink Reflections” by Marla Cilley.

Zone 1 – Entrance/Dining Room/Front Porch
Zone 2 – Kitchen
Zone 3 – Bathroom/Children’s Rooms/Spare Bedroom or Office
Zone 4 – Master Bedroom/Master Bathroom
Zone 5 – Living Room/Family Room/Den

Each zone designates the same week number on the calendar.  With Flylady Kelly puts out the weekly missions for the current zone to be focused on for 15 minutes each day.  Some of my members will put it in my closed group for convenience.  Otherwise you can easily find it on Flylady’s website.

Now, I know in my group everyone is waiting for the missions for the week.  It is like they can’t do anything until they get their missions.  This is all great and I am glad you get excited waiting for them.  The problem is that not everyone is READY for Zone Work Detail Cleaning.  Let me say this again.  Not everyone is READY for Zone Work Detail Cleaning.

What Do You Do Instead And Who Am I Talking About?
Instead, when you are in the Zone for the week, if you are just starting out, starting over, still working on decluttering, this is what you do instead of Kelly’s Missions!  YOU DECLUTTER 15 MINUTES EACH DAY IN THIS ZONE!  Don’t worry about the Detail Zone Cleaning!  You are not READY for it!  Clutter has got to go out the door in each zone FIRST before you are READY for Zone Detail Cleaning.

This is where I got my aha moment.  Most of my members of Marilyn’s Way are at various levels of learning their own way to FLY using Flylady lessons.  Some of us have not bought the book and I recommend that you do.  It is clearly written in there.  You have to look for it.

You cannot Detail Clean until you Declutter!!  All you are doing is moving things from one location to another.  Maybe they will go into another room.  When that Zone comes up during the month, there it is.  Where do you put it?  In another room or zone again.  You continue to repeat this process and after three months you can’t see any difference in your home so you give up for awhile.  Maybe trying it again after you have tried another system.  If you still have clutter in your zones, deal with it by a simple system called “Throw Away” “Give Away” or “Put Away.”

When I found Flylady, I was wall to wall filled with clutter.  It was in my cabinets, my drawers, and boxes.  Why did it take so long to declutter?  There are various reasons.  Health issues, circumstances changed, a life event happens, and another reason and another.

Whenever Kelly’s Weekly Missions came out for the week, I would do the first day maybe and not do the rest.  Why?  Because I became frustrated with the fact that I would have to move my clutter in order to do the mission.  It actually made me nauseous. By Tuesday or Wednesday I would give up and tell myself I would start on next week’s Zone Work which lasted for a day or two and I would give up.  Not because I was lazy.  It was because I had not grasped the concept that I must DECLUTTER FIRST in each Zone before I do the Zone Detailed Work!

I hope it doesn’t take as long as it did for me to understand this.  Sometimes we get too caught up in our lists or all the reasons we just don’t have the energy to do the dinner dishes because all we see is all the clutter in our homes and YES it sucks the energy right out of you!

What Do You Do In The Meantime?
You focus on the basic habits that will get you in motion.  Where can these habits be found?  In the Monthly Habits!  That is what I finally did in 2011.  I focused on very basic daily habits by focusing on the weekly habits for specific days and the monthly habits for the year.  I didn’t worry about the detailed cleaning in each Zone because I didn’t have each Zone decluttered.  As time went on, certain zones got decluttered faster.  Those are the Zones I began to begin my Detail Zone Cleaning!  Now if I am not following the rule if something new comes in, something old must go out in a particular zone, I stop the Detail Zone Cleaning and start the Declutter Zone Cleaning.

To think it took a visit from Flylady for me to understand this.  So if you want to know what I learned most from my visit?  This is it!  When others are Detail Zone Cleaning and you are just not there yet, DECLUTTER in the weekly zone each month until the clutter is gone so you can begin to do Detail Zone Cleaning!
Keep FLYing!

Day 31 Of The Greatest Paper Clutter Eliminator Game!

Day 31.  Wasn’t quite sure I could stay with this challenge and game for 31 days but I did it and my home is thanking me for it.

I didn’t get it all done but then that would be calling it “Perfect” wouldn’t it?  Instead, I will continue with the incoming mail and declutter the pockets of paper clutter that have been tucked away in strange places for unknown reasons but at the time made sense.

Today I am going to consolidate the things I am keeping in box or boxes and mark them “Put Away.”  I will then take the boxes and put them in my extra room to bring out the box and work on it each day in November until it is completed.  I won’t be posting about it.  My challenge for myself was for the month of October practicing the Habit of “Paper Clutter.”

November’s Habit is “Meal Planning.”  That means I will be practicing that habit.  I won’t be writing about it.  I am going to turn things down a notch for me and enjoy my November concentrating on as much yard clean up I can get done before it is impossible to do it.  I don’t know for sure when I am getting my shed so will be using my empty tubs from eliminating Paper Clutter to put my whimsies in.

Keep Getting Rid of Paper Clutter and Keep FLYing!
Marilyn

My corner is empty.  It is where the old propane furnace was and I couldn’t get back there to paint.  I also have to get rid of the stove pipe.  It isn’t a pretty picture when it comes to the work I have to do yet.  But it sure looks pretty to me because the corner is free of boxes I worked on during October’s Habit “Paper Clutter.”  Whoosh!  A big accomplishment for myself personally and that is what FLYing is about, making yourself happy!
