Cleaning Your Fridge

“The refrigerator is one of the hardest working appliances in your home — and one that often takes a beating. It’s subject to spills, varied odors, and overcrowding, and it’s the one appliance that never gets a rest. A clean refrigerator promises to keep food fresher, so do your best to maintain the cleanliness of this kitchen workhorse.” -Martha Stewart

End of the month is always a great time for myself to clean the inside of my fridge. To me, it is all about preparing for the coming month.

Wednesdays I usually clean out spoiled food and wipe the shelves down one shelf at a time. I call it a ‘Refrigerator Boogie’. It also has other benefits.

  1. A great time to take inventory of items on hand before the weekly grocery shopping trip.
  2. Prepares the fridge for the food one purchases.
  3. Makes dinner preparation easier.

However, the end of the month is when I have the least amount of food in it and I take advantage of removing what is in there and mixing a solution of baking soda and water to give it a good wipe down.

I always have my running grocery list nearby to jot things down as I think of them during this time.

After. Nice and clean!

Now, the only thing I have to wait for is ‘Pay Day!’

Habit # 1 The Easy Way To Get Dressed To Shoes!

Exercise Days

*Part of a 10 week series. To get involved join the Facebook group Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! System To Remove Clutter & CHAOS

Some may wonder, what are FLYing clothes?  It is simple.  It is something you feel comfortable in wearing while you are FLYing. The purpose is to get you out of your pajamas that tells your mind to slumber rather than FLY.  So what I am going to do is give you some pictures of FLYing clothes that I have worn.

Your FLYing Clothes Are Determined By What You Are Doing For That Particular Day.

For example:   I am putting exercise into my FLYing at least 3 times a week.  They are not old worn out sweats.  I have 3 workout outfits that I wear that includes jackets.  Nothing fancy. Each piece from Walmart $10.00 a piece.  I layer with a sports bra and top with thin straps.  If I need to run to the store that is only 11 miles away, I can easily do it wearing the outfit.  I can also clean/FLY in it.  So now I know what 3 out of 7 outfits I am wearing for the week.
Errand Day
One day is Errand Day.  I usually wear nice jeans and a nice top.  One day is Renew Your Spirit Day and I wear a nice pair of slacks and top to church.  This leaves me with 2 days left.  What do I wear? I wear clothes that I feel comfortable in.  For me it is side elastic jeans and a top or a sports bra and top with skinny straps with a jacket over it.  That completes 7 days for me.  If there is something I am working on that I am afraid I might stain a top, I pull out my work shirt to cover any spills.  I also have an apron I will put on if I think I will get dirty.

Renew Your Spirit Day
In A Nutshell, FLYing Clothes Are The Ones In Between Your Good Clothes And Your Grunge Clothes.  It Is The Type Of Clothing That You Won’t Feel Bad Wearing When An Old Friend Shows Up At Your Door Or Running To The Store Quick To Pick Something Up And You Run Into An Old Boyfriend.  You Have To Keep One Set Of Grunge Clothes For Certain Jobs.  I Call Them My Painting Clothes.  They Aren’t Super Grungy.  They Have Paint On Them Because I Am Painting.
Apron To Protect Your Clothes
I hope this explains what FLYing Clothes are.  I had a problem at first and if you notice in any of my Individual Photos when I was doing the challenge “Getting Dressed To Shoes, Hair and Makeup”  It was tops and bottoms with a shirt.  It is as simple as this.  So please take a chance on the FLYing side and get out of your pajamas and “Get Dressed To Shoes!”

Can’t Get Motivated? Here’s A Tip That Will Work!

You know the days. They are the ones where you have so many things to do and yet become frozen in your tracks. So what do you do?

Take Out The Trash!

That’s right! Take out the trash! The first 2 minutes of starting something is the hardest. Why not do a task that doesn’t include much thinking.

The number 1 problem today is Information Overload.    It gets to the point where it makes one counter productive. Who hasn’t experienced surfing on the internet and 5 hours later none of the things you wanted to get done have even been started. Do this a couple of times and then we get into the next level, the Snowball Effect.

In order to snap out of this we have to break away from the computer or the television and simply move. The easiest way is to take out the trash.

Taking out the trash symbolizes that we must get the old out before we can deal with the new. It also gives us a chance to get some fresh air that allows ‘Positive Energy’ to begin to ‘Flow’ again. In other words, it is another way to Dance Till You FLY!

Donation/Giveaway Box Oh My!

Every home has trash cans in multiple places in the home. We do it to make our lives easier. In fact if we recycle, chances are there is a recycling center set up in the home.

So why don’t we have a Donation/Giveaway Box located somewhere in our home? One of the rules to keep our homes free of clutter is if we bring in something new, naturally something old must go out. And yet we don’t do it. Could it be as simple as having a Donation/Giveaway Box located in let’s say our laundry room?

In my Marilyn’s Way Secret Group January is devoted to the 31 Day Cha Cha Cha Event! It involves throwing away, giving away and putting away  items in our home. When we do sessions of decluttering it is best to have three boxes set up for the task + a timer.

Then there is the time when as you go about your day, you may run into something that you wonder why you bought it and the thought “I need to get rid of this.” thought comes to play. Problem is we won’t act on it because we haven’t created a place to put those items like we do with a trash can. When trash cans are full, naturally they go outside for garbage pick up.

Clock for Marilyns Way Its Challenge Timename4

What is the challenge? It is to stop what you are doing and find a box or a tote and put a sign on it that says Donations/Give Away and place it in your Laundry Room. Next time you find something that you can give away, put it in the box and when the box gets full put it in your car and take it with you to drop off during your next Doo Wop Errand Day! It really is that simple.

Finish It Up Fridays!

Recently I have found a name and a description for the 5 working days of the week. I like the addition to Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! System. Of course it is always optional and can be used for variety.

Why I decided to have some fun names for each day of the working week is to provide structure. Remember Sundays many families have sat down to a chicken dinner. When one thought of Sunday they immediately associated it with church and chicken dinner. Today I am writing about Friday.

‘Finish It Up Fridays’ is simply that! Whatever projects you have been working on during the week, today is the day to finish them up so Saturday can be fun time and Sunday a day of rejuvenating yourself. Examples of ‘Finish It Up Fridays’ are:

  • Undone Paperwork With A Deadline
  • Balancing Your Checkbook
  • Any Household Project You Started During The Week
  • List Is Endless

If we learn to plan our lives one week at a time, the days and months go so much better. Why? Because breaking things up by days, weeks, months, quarters, and years makes ones life a bit more manageable and isn’t that what we all are searching for?

A New Dance! Crisis Cleaning!

Are you ready for a new dance? Most are this time of year. The dance I will be talking about today is ‘Crisis Cleaning’.

The extended family is coming to your home for the holidays. Most of us hold our breath in and afraid to let it out. We seem to panic when company is coming. Why? Peer pressure is probably the main issue.

We have all been here before. Some several times. The point is yes I need to do a ‘Crisis Clean’ and this time I will do it confidently. Why? Because I am giving you a step by step way to crisis clean hitting the high points of your home first that will help you get through this dance.

crisiscleaningmw

  1. Get Dressed To Shoes – Before you do anything when it comes to the house, this is the most important step that helps you to begin. I could tell you all the reasons but that is for another time. Take faith and ‘Just Do It’.
  2. Three Zones To Focus On – Bathroom, Kitchen and Living Room. This is where your guests will be spending their time. Do these three areas first and in this order.
  3. Entry and Bedrooms – After the three zones are done.
  4. Start with the Bathroom – We start with the bathroom. Why? Part of getting dressed to shoes will be spent in the bathroom. You are already here so let’s do the ‘Swish & Swipe’. It helps to give a bottle of Windex and some paper towels a home. Set them by the toilet bowl cleaner in the cabinet. Swish the toilet and swipe the mirrors and sink.
  5. Kitchen – Lots of action will be taking place here!  Have you turned your dancing music on yet? ‘Do It Now’. If you have dishes in the sink and on the counter, move them aside. Empty the sink and fill it with hot water and some bleach. Let it soak. Grab a trash bag and begin to move from left to right and clockwise around the kitchen and get rid of trash. There is always plenty in the kitchen. This will free up some space.
  6. Living Room – While the sink is soaking, move on to the living room with your trash bag and start tossing. Magazines and newspapers first, the rest next. Slip into the bathroom to look for trash there. This is the first ‘Cha’ of the Cha Cha Cha. We will take this bag and put it outside in the trash. This includes all trash cans in these areas as well. We have to ‘throw away’ before we can ‘give away’ and ‘put away’ We are not going to be getting into detailed decluttering but if we see something that can be given away it is going into a box. Scan the three rooms quickly and without much thought. Whatever you collect take it to the car to be donated on your next errand day. Here comes the hardest. It is the ‘Put Away’ part of the crisis cleaning. It will be a challenge but can be done. Go to each of the top 3 rooms and gather like items to be picked up and put away in the general area it belongs. Do some light dusting in the living room.
  7. Break Time! – Remember this is a crisis clean. We just want our homes presentable for a short period of time while having guests. If we have to ‘Stash n Dash’ so be it.  The only way one can keep it clean is by creating 9 habits to practice each day that take care of ourselves, our families and our home’. We crisis clean for 30 minutes, take a break for 15 minutes, repeat until done.
  8. Back To The Kitchen – Scrub around the faucets and the faucet itself. You can also scrub around the edge of your sink. Drain you bleach water and next fill up one side of the sink with hot soapy water. It is time to do the dishes and get them done whether it is hand washing or putting them into the empty dishwasher. We cannot scrub our counters and appliances until we get rid of the dishes and anything else sitting out. If you are hand washing your dishes, as soon as you are done, move on to drying them and putting them away. This is crucial. It helps you get to the next step of wiping counters, cupboards and appliances down. Move from left to right, top to bottom and move clockwise around the room using your left hand to lift objects so you can wipe with your right hand. Continue to work around the room until you get back to the sink. Depending on how dirty the counters are you may have to back track to clean you dish cloth out and then go back to where you left off.
  9. Floors, floors, floors – Vacuum all your floors if you can to pick up dirt and dust. Then mop the floors and you are done! If you have some free time touch up the entry and if you don’t have time for the bedrooms, you can always shut the door!

Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! Series

If you are just joining us the following are the links we have covered so far.

Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! Series Week #1
Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! Series Week #2
Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! Series Week #3
Marilyn’s Way Dance Till You FLY! Series Week #4

This week we are starting with habit number one – Getting Dressed To Shoes.  I am not asking you to get all doled up.  I am simply asking you to get out of your pajamas and into some clothes.  This sets your mind up to get to work.  Some may say they can declutter and clean in their pajamas just fine.  Can you really?  What about the knock on the door?  Maybe Timmy became ill at school.  Would you be ready?  These things happen in real life.

If you are already getting dressed to shoes each day, hooray for you!  It may be because you have to go to work every day.  If you are a stay at home mom aren’t you also working?

Can You Be Successful With The Series Without Getting Dressed To Shoes?

The answer is yes because you are successful for just being you!  If the thought of getting dressed to shoes appalls you, don’t stop.  Just proceed to the next habit which I will reveal next Monday.

For those who want to give it a try, become aware how you feel when you are dressed to shoes verses dressing in pajamas.  Jot the notes down in your notebook/3 ring binder.

For those that aren’t sure of what FLYing Clothes are, please read What Are FLYing Clothes?  It gives you a better idea.

This week’s goal is focusing on ‘Getting Dressed To Shoes’ each day.  If you stumble, pick yourself up and begin again.  One thing I have learned in this journey is there are many beginnings and stumbles.  It is simply your way of learning what does or doesn’t work for you.  I am simply giving you a set of guidelines.  It is up to you to write your own ‘Dance Card’.  Having a notebook or 3 ring binder for notes makes it easier to get there.  We all learn differently.

Friday’s Weekly Wrap Up

I didn’t get as much coverage on my three blogs this week and hoping to get some in this week’s ‘Friday’s Weekly Wrap Up.’

Monday I introduced  Dance Till You FLY! mw System Series where I have found a way to take care of myself, my family, and my home and garden so I can enjoy life and want to share my findings with you.  There is no product that I am selling.  It is just honest real time information I want to pass along.  Mondays will be devoted to this until further notice.

It is an interesting journey trying to find one’s voice on the internet.  My mission is to break through some barriers and practice getting to the point with what I have to say because I know you are busy and nothing is more frustrating when looking for something on the web and can’t find it.  I experience this on a daily basis as I develop my blog.

Tuesdays are going to be about my passion Gardening.  I want to show everyone it doesn’t take that much to have a green thumb.  It is a matter of making sure the plant has the right sunlight and water combo as I have learned once again this year that seedlings that dampen off (fall over and the base of the root gets weak) of not enough sunlight and too much water.  I am convinced these seedlings would have made it if I would have been able to get them outside.  All my plants had the right start and sometimes it isn’t anything that we do.  Sometimes the seedlings are not meant to be.  Until I learn otherwise this is my finding.

Wednesdays are about Lifestyle and this week I wrote about my take on Fibromyalgia.  I was diagnosed in 1989 so I can say I have had lots of experience with it.  What I wanted to come out of the piece is you won’t die from Fibromyalgia like Cancer but you can have as much pain and in order to manage it, ones approach must be multi faceted and a very High Maintenance illness not leaving much free time.

That’s my week of what I wanted to share with you.

1.  There is a way to take care of yourself, your family, and your home and garden and still enjoy life

2.  I am very anxious for gardening to start but delayed due to weather.

3.  Although Fibromayalgia is painful, one won’t die from it.  It just makes one’s life miserable if one lets it.

I would love to hear any comments on what I wrote this week.  I know you are busy and just a few words to me from you is a big thing for me.  Until next Friday’s Weekly Wrap Up have a wonderful weekend!  I plan to!

Day 5 Of The Great Declutter Your Kitchen And Organize Your Pantry Event

Good morning all you Foster sisters out there.  Can I call you a foster sister?  Living in a household with three brothers growing up, I always wanted a sister.  Instead, I had imaginary sisters.  I like to call Marilyn’s Way like a sisterhood where I share with you my Dance Till You FLY! mw System (c) 2014 featuring nine habits each day every day.

The system is influenced by the FlyLady along with my education, experience and limitations.  I live with fibromyalgia and am ADD – Attention Deficit Disorder.  It is quite the combination when you are trying to take care of your home.  Either you are hurting from the fibromyalgia or can’t focus because your ADD mind won’t let you.  Those are two pretty big strikes one is up against. Besides housework is repetitive and doesn’t get much ‘atta girl’ compliments from the rest of the family.  I will be writing more about these subjects in the coming months.  Today, I invite you to sign up to follow me and you will be notified when I post something new.

You see I have a lot of things I want to talk about and am bursting at the seams to share what I have learned living with this.  I am hoping I will say something that you understand and can help you get your ‘aha’ moments.  If I can make your life easier by sharing how I do things, maybe it could work for you then that makes me happy.

Do It In A Way That Makes Sense To You!
Said that, it is time in the Great Declutter Your Kitchen And Organize Your Pantry series this month to do a ‘Refrigerator Cha Cha!!’  What is it exactly?  It is going deep into your fridge and getting all those science projects out of there, wipe down shelves and doors.  Then you organize it so that it makes sense to you.  Notice the last sentence.  If I could give you one piece of advice when it comes to taking care of yourself and your home, organize and do it in a way that makes sense to you.  This is how the habits stay with you.  You now own them.  They are yours.

There are many ways to declutter and organize your refrigerator and I am not saying you should do it my way.  Instead I am asking you to find your way of doing it that makes sense to you so that when the time comes around to do another ‘Refrigerator Cha Cha’, it will come effortless and won’t give you time to think of all the reasons you don’t want to do it.

You see, the majority of us are not saying we don’t want to take care of ourselves and our home.  Many of us were not taught the skills, given the tools, or even the permission to find ‘our way’ of doing it.  One thing that I did learn and is in my ‘toolbox’ is when I start anything it is always ‘top to bottom, left to right and clockwise.  When cleaning a counter, lift the item with your left hand, wipe it off, where it sits and put it back down.  For years I was doing it completely backwards getting in my way.  No wonder I have hated dusting.  Is this the right way to do this?  Who knows?  I just know since I started doing it this way things have become easier for me.

Marilyn’s Way is about making things easier for you by finding your way of doing things.  I may suggest but more so I will just share how I do things and if it can help you, I am happy, you are happy, and that is all that matters.   We don’t have to take on the entire world in one day.  We learn to do parts of things in a day and be content with what we get done. If we can make it fun by dancing as we do things, why not?  I am hearing my fridge calling me.  “Let’s Cha Cha!” says the refrigerator!

Flash forward a couple of hours.  ( I forgot to track the time.)  I wish I could say it was all done.  For some reason the focus just hasn’t been there.  Plans have changed.  I am going to finish up the rest of the fridge only.  I don’t plan to buy anything frozen tomorrow and the priority was the fridge because I know I will be bringing home fresh fruit and vegetables.  I will also be buying my stash of greek yogurt.

What have I been doing then?  Facebook and the internet of course!  For some reason I felt I had to search for the right cleaning solution to clean the inside of the fridge.  I already knew it!  Why did I not think I didn’t?  Because we are always searching for a better way.  I just got sucked into it.

That is why I keep a notebook and this experience will go in there.  It is the tab called ‘Key Information’.  It is the same place I noted which way the ceiling fan is supposed to go in the summer.  Through this journey I intend to find my way of doing things and I urge you to do the same.  I saw many say vinegar solution.  That doesn’t work for me because part of having fibromyalgia I tend to be on the acidic side.  The only way I can use vinegar is using non latex gloves.

What did I end up doing?  I made a solution of baking soda with a touch of dishsoap in room temp water so I didn’t crack the glass on the shelves.  I will be noting this by the ceiling fan direction in my Franklin Planner.

Here is what I have gotten done so far.  I would say I got 2 – 15ers in it.  I found out it was dirtier than I thought.  My OCD started to kick in and so I had to take a break.  When that kicks in high speed, I would be up all night cleaning.   That again defeats the purpose of taking care of myself and my home.  Tomorrow I would be worthless.  It threatens my habits I have established.

And that is part of how I got fibromyalgia.  I wouldn’t listen to my body.  Today I have to whether I want to or not.  The old adage is true:  If you don’t have your health…it makes it hard to do anything.

Front of my refrigerator.  Logan’s coloring have been up over a month.  Time to take it down and put in his box.

The side of my refrigerator.  Some of the magnets are from my 102 year old great aunt.  I will be cleaning the outside at a later time.  I have to recover from the inside!  Welcome to my world.  It can get frustrating and that doesn’t make it any better.
It doesn’t look too bad.  I know there are some things that need to be taken out of there.

I am seeing some things that can go.  I am so guilty of trying to squeeze the last drop.
Top shelf clean.

Top and second shelf and meat drawer clean and then…
I saw this and then…

I saw more.  The bottom glass shelf and mechanics are being washed along with the drawers
All the parts nice and clean

Now this is ready for tomorrow when I bring home some groceries.  The door will have to be another time.  This took another 3 – 15ers.  I began to run out of energy and is getting late.  I know I will be writing this down on my list of tasks how much time it took so I can plan accordingly.

And NOW it is time to rinse the things I took out that have been soaking.  They are going in the dishwasher because I have to take out the trash and then do habits 7 shine my sink, 8 lay out my clothes, and 9 have my launch pad ready.  I am going to town tomorrow!

Dance Till You FLY! mw
Marilyn

(NOTE:  All of this was done in real time.  Nothing was staged.  When I set out on this journey I was searching for something I could do my way.  That is how I best learn with keeping consistency in the front of my mind.  I found Flylady in 2005 and have learned so much.  What I learned was the importance of habits.  From there I created Dance Till You FLY! mw featuring nine habits each day every day.  It is a simple plan that also has weekly habits and monthly events.  I am sharing it with you all and to not give up.  Practicing the nines will get you far.  Dance Till You FLY! mw was also created for me living with fibromyalgia and being ADD.  It wasn’t until I found Flylady and took her March Habit of Getting Dressed to Shoes and posting a photo with a mini blog daily for 436 consecutive days did I learn the importance of habit.  If you want to see the video that Flylady made of me getting dressed to shoes for one year to her song, click on Flybaby Marilyn and that will take you there.  While you are there check out Flylady’s videos.  She has great ones. )

She has great ones. )
