An Adventure With A Surprising End!

Posted on Posted in Uncategorized

The Old Railroad Tracks

I live two blocks away from where the railroad tracks lay that the Milwaukee Railroad laid back in 1887 and established this area as the town of Garden City.  It is a great story how the town got its name.  I will be writing about it in the future so check back often.

I decided to walk the tracks.  I was hunting for asparagus.  There was a post that may have had a sign on it at one time saying ‘Garden City’.  Now overgrown with prairie grass I tried to envision exactly where the tracks were laid.

Towards the right middle you will see two posts. They helped in holding up a wall. As you can see over the years it gave way.

Surprised By A Visitor

I am kicking around the prairie grass trying to get the feel of the track when all of a sudden I woke up a snake!  This wasn’t the size I was used to seeing that visits my place.  This garter snake was huge!  Must be an old mama snake.  I didn’t even see the end of its tail.  That is how long I suspect it was.

What’s A Girl To Do?

Scream!  I tell you!  And boy did I scream!  I wasn’t expecting a snake.  It did do me a favor.  It helped me let go of many of my pressures I feel on a daily basis maintaining my fibromyalgia and doing things normal people do in a very different and creative way with many times taking 20% longer to do.  Suddenly (that is after the screaming stopped) I felt refreshed!  I found very few as to  what I was looking for.  It was wild asparagus hunting!  I got enough for a meal.

What Found Me!

There was something I found plenty of.  It was wood ticks!  I looked down and I saw a gang of them traveling at their highest speed up my jeans!  Did I step in a pile of them?  That is what it looked like.  I could have also picked them up as I walked the stretch of rail road track.

Plenty of wood ticks.

I got home and a shower followed shortly as I picked off three more.  A friend of mine mentioned to put them in some dishwashing liquid.  It worked!  Now this was an adventure!

When was the last time you went off on an adventure?  When was the last time you screamed?  I would love to hear the story.  Please comment.

Note:  If you like what I write about, feel free to share with others.  Maybe you know a friend that would like my style of writing.  I have had no training.  I just love to write about things I love and ways to stay in touch with myself in this world of technology.

  1. WOW ! What a journey your walk turned out to be! I went out today with two of my boys.. We went to the park.. No ticks.. No snakes… Just some rude kids… I hope the snake does not put you off going for more walks.. It is good for the soul.

    1. I could do without the ticks but no it won’t keep me from venturing out. I am a farm girl and we used to play out in the shelter belts and let our imaginations run wild. That is great that the three of your did some family time together. Thank you for commenting.

  2. WOW! quite an adventure. Nice that you can hunting for asparagus.
Thank you for sharing, those asparagus looks good. The snake? I don’t know. Good thing you saw it first. Have a great week.

    1. Yes it was! and yes I am glad I saw the snake first too! As a kid we used to go asparagus hunting and it is fun because it gives one an excuse to be outdoors with nature. You have a great week too. Thank you for commenting.

  3. The asparagus looked yummy. We also have old railway tracks around here. They have made them into walking trails. Haven’t done the whole length as yet, but they are very popular. Screaming, yelling, shouting, singing – anything vocal releases stress. Out in the middle of nowhere is a good place to practice….. Looking forward to more of your adventures Marilyn…

    1. The asparagus was yummy. I cooked it on the grill. That is a great idea for old train tracks. The farmers grain elevator is thinking about making it into a road so all the semi trucks don’t have to drive through our little town. Yes, it did feel good to scream like that. It had been a long time. I think after I screamed I looked around and started to giggle. Ha! Thank you for commenting.

  4. Hi Marilyn ,
you had a nice adventure 🙂
I go sometimes for adventures as well ,
Snakes are here everywhere I like them ,they are very useful.
I can not remember when I screamed last time ,I am usually not afraid.
Would be nice to go together to an adventure like this 🙂

    1. Yes snakes are useful. Just away from me! Ha! I will have to find a picture of a garter snake in my garden kind of wrapped some way on my trellis with cucumbers last year. I guess the scariest part is seeing the strip through bi focal glasses! It gets me every time! And yes it would be fun to go on an adventure with you! Thank you for commenting.

  5. I do not mind snakes or ticks. What I don’t like is the surprise. I would rather see it at least a few feet away. A surprise from almost any creepy creature will result in some sort of insane fit on my part and sadly the possible death of the object that caused the surprise.
    I do love a good scream. 🙂

    1. Yes, I agree with you. I just experienced a shorter scream today when watering my hostas on the east side of the house. I started to do a little weeding and I almost put my hand on a dead mouse! It was just enough to get the heart pumping! And come to think of it, I do seem to save the screaming for the spring, summer and fall! Thank you for commenting.
