The day has finally come where I can finish planting my vegetable garden. Weather and other circumstances have not cooperated until now. I am just so excited to get out there and play in the dirt. I made myself a breakfast full of lean protein and complex carbohydrates to keep my energy level even. What my breakfast was consisted of one whole egg and four egg whites scrambled with a sprinkle of finely shredded cheese and grits.
This also happened to fall on my 100th day of flying dressed to shoes, hair and makeup. I started it like the 99 days before. Make my bed, eat breakfast, get dressed to shoes, hair, make up. While I am in the bathroom I do my swish and swipe. Then I put a load of laundry in the washer. This is my routine I created with the help of Flylady. The rest of the day varies as to what zone we are in and day of the week.
Some things are time sensitive and planting my vegetable garden is one of them. Believe it or not, this is the first time I didn’t have it all planned out on a piece of paper. I started to and realized I could spend hours on drawing and planning. If I wanted to put my garden on one of those software programs that look so neat, I would still have to learn how to use the software.
So, my next question to myself in regards to using a garden software program or even drawing my garden out on grid paper was, “How am I going to do this extracurricular activity, plant the garden and keep up with my daily routines?” Sometimes there are trade offs, right? Not always. I had to make a choice. The choice was, do I want to spend all this time in the “world of perfectionism” so I could have a pretty piece of paper that I would call my vegetable garden? Am I going to be able to use it in any other way but just to look at it? No! It’s not as if that piece of paper is going to magically plant and grow my garden! Sometimes we can drive ourselves crazy getting caught up in the details. There is a place and time for details and I decided this isn’t really one of them.
Plants are so forgiving. They know how to adapt. All we have to do is give them some water, sun, fertilizer and a little love. I made three decisions when it came to planting. I would plant the vegetables that have vines on the outside edge of the garden so they can crawl out into the yard some. Plant the row crops together and then space out the plants that stand alone. The instructions are always on the packets and I don’t think there is a warning sign that says “If not planted perfectly plants will not grow!” The rest of it is up to the weather.
That is when I remembered a Flylady phrase about housework. I am going to take that phrase and replace the word housework with gardening. “Gardening Done Incorrectly Still Blesses The Family!” By understanding this phrase, I am not going to have to worry anymore whether I can garden and continue my routines and keep this peaceful world of flyland I have created for myself. Whether I am doing housework or gardening incorrectly it still blesses my family and if you try this approach it will bless you too!
So all you Flybaby Gardeners have fun and enjoy your time outside this gardening season! The beauty is all around us when we look for it. I have seen some beautiful pictures on Flybaby Gardens and have posted them on my Facebook Page Home/Garden. I would love to receive more! You can post the photos and a comment at The Flylady Way . (Home/Garden) I have added pages like National Home Gardening Association and some Master Gardeners Pages of the midwest. Mc Crory Gardens is one I will be visiting a few times this season and will share my perspective.
Keep Flying!
Happy Gardening!
