Yes, I know I have a blog named Marilyn’s Way To Organization For Home And Garden. I have never said I was an expert. I am just learning right along with you and when I find something that works I share it with you all. I do have a BS Degree in Home Economics so some of this stuff I can say I am an expert.
Last year the focus was the vegetable garden. I am still going to have one and it needs to be planted soon. I am trying my best not to get too many projects going at once. But this time of year it is a challenge. Anyone who gardens knows what I mean.
This year is the first year I have tried bulbs. Last fall I planted tulips and hyacinth. I also transplanted some hostas. Previous years I either planted seed or bought plants.
So why can it be difficult and confusing and funny planting bulbs? For one thing, this is my first rodeo at this and I have no idea what some of these bulbs look like. The delphinium aurora blue were easy. It said plant count clearly on the bag; plant count 2. I got them in no problem.
Next I was going to put in the liatris spicata in. The package said 25 roots. I spent so much time trying to see if there was something I was missing. I even sprayed them with water to see if it was tuber to separate that way. I tried to take them apart but thought no way is this 25 roots! So I said the heck with it. What will be, will be.
Next I was going to put the Astilbe Red Sentinel in. It said 3 root pack and I had a specific place where I wanted to put them. So I opened the bag and there was 25 ball like roots in the bag! I just started laughing mostly because I was letting my perfectionism take over earlier that I spent so much time on it!
Moral of this story? Don’t take the covers off the bags until ready to plant and I mean one at a time! I knew I was going to plant them all and took the labels off. Then one of those SHE moments happened. (Sidetracked Home Executive) When I go back I opened one bag thinking it was the Liatris spicata because in my mind that was what I wanted to plant next. In the end the problem was this bag was the Astilbe Red Sentinel. Of course I didn’t realize it until I opened the last bag and there——-was 25 round balls called roots and THESE were the liatris spicata! All I could do is laugh at myself thinking of all the time I spent trying to see if there was a way these Astilbe Red Sentinel would separate into 25 roots! So, I dug them up and move them where I had them planned to go and put the Liatris spicata there. Oh, since there were 25 roots, where was I going to put them all? I found a space. I just have 6 more and I will find another place to put them.
I hope you can laugh with me and please don’t tell me I am the only one that has does somthing like this. I believe it happens more than we think but we love gardening so much that we keep going!
And another thing, why do these plants all have to have these names I must learn how to pronounce and to spell? Is this an inside joke? Once we get the names down it could sound like we are having quite the intelligent conversation and others overhearing our conversation may think we are talking about something very serious. Well, in a way we are. We are talking flowers! They bring so much joy to our lives. And let’s not forget to thank the bees for their part in this. Just stay out of their way and let them do their work.
Happy Gardening!
