MW Stepping Stones Series
This step you get to play. I want you to get a couple sheets of paper, pencil, eraser, and a ruler. Borrow your childrens’ if you don’t have any. What I want you to draw out is your home’s floor plan. We are not talking drawing like a professional designer. We just want to do the best we can. Why am I asking you of this? I want you to understand the flow of your home.
Think about the time of day when you go to pick up your children from school or you are coming home from work. Now, I am sure many of you are wondering what a floor plan has to do with keeping your home nice? I am here to tell you it can. Become aware of where you place things when you are getting home. You may be surprised.
What about when you get up in the morning? Are you doing too much backtracking causing you to be late where ever you go? I remember the pre flylady days when I was running around my house like a crazed woman looking for this and that trying to get ready. Next thing I know, I am late.
Maybe there is a reason why the clothes never get put away. Are you using the best place to fold your clothes? I either use my table or I have a counter I can fold things on and then walk right into each room that the towels are to be put away and my bedroom with my clothes.
The following in my floor plan. It is nothing fancy. It just shows me how to create my habits and routines to coordinate with my floor plan. By doing this, I have moved a few things around in my house to make it easier for me when I do a Pick Up Put Away or doing the Laundry.

My Floor Plan
This is my floor plan with the Kitchen being the largest room in the house. I have many challenges in here as part of it is the original school house before the town was a town. Then it was added on. The last part added on was the top left corner of the house. It was added on when they put in a bathroom. I call that room a dining room but I don’t know what it is. Obviously there could have been a bigger bathroom. Also in that corner by the closet is the door that goes out into Lily’s play area and beyond is the garden. I am so happy to have a gate that I can go in and out of to the garden without having to walk all around my house. Now I use the closet for many of my gardening supplies. It is convenient for me. Before I could do that I had to declutter.
Have fun with this. Let go of the perfectionism. This is just an exercise to see for yourself if you the way you do your habits and routines go with the flow of your home. If not change it where you can. When you are through with this. List one change you made to help you fly better.
Keep FLYing!
Marilyn
